Y’all are just classic ass inarticulate haters.

There’s a massive distinction between organic humor ,the natural, slightly absurd or desperate reaction of someone placed in an unthinkable situation

Engineered jokes designed to get a cheap laugh during every creature encounter. When a filmmaker tries to land a punchline during a monster scene, they are actively pulling the rug out from under the dread they just spent ten minutes trying to build.

Just because you enjoyed this doesn’t mean you have any more right to discuss this than someone who didn’t.

Why are the “positive” folk so defensive?

Because they don’t want to come to terms with the fact they just blindly follow RT scores and can’t actually think for themselves

I have typed multiple paragraphs about the themes, what I liked, what personally didnt connect with me. How I think they could continue this even if cregger didnt come back

I mean I don’t think what Cregger did was bad. It was just mid. Truth though is I don’t really think there’s any horror filmmaker rn that could do a resident evil movie well.

I think a Resdient evil movie not based on the mainline characters is a good idea and think someone could do it better . I agree I dont think this was terrible just underwhelming

the metaness of it at times of the gamer entering the situation of the game and how its executed at times reminds me of the corniness of parts of matrix resurrections. Even down to the falling zombies falling to their death to stop the player from reaching said end destination.

I’m sorry, yall are actually bugging with this s***.

If that’s how you feel, then more power to you, but there was no world where this film was gonna gel with you then, you fundamentally would not enjoy what Cregger was going for with this movie.

In a way its a nice experience because many thought Obsession was overrated and were disapointed thats how I feel about Resident Evil. Difference is many who thought Obsession was overrated make it their entire personality to hate on it success when I am glad this is successful its good for movies.

He’s trying to juggle a very specific tone in an incredibly simple, straightforward action/horror/comedy hybrid film in an era where pretty much every horror flick that manages to break out has a more overt arthouse veneer to it that use the genre as a vehicle to critique societal/personal issues.

This movie has those in the lightest of senses, but its primary concerns are with momentum and technique.

Given the critical and commercial success, I’d say he managed to pull it off in the eyes of most people (myself included), but yeah, again, it’s still a very specific concoction he’s dealing with here, so it’s not going to go over for everybody, especially if there are any pre-existing idea of what this can or cannot be.

it doesnt work for everyone and thats okay

I got Hokum and HOPE above this for some elements. While also respecting this attempted to do what it atttempted to do. Bone Temple also had some high moments for me. Its been a good year for horror regardless of what someone enjoys

a video game movie doing well is good for the future and they can keep this going with or without cregger and still find success.

Do you mean the milla ones? I’m not into those ones at all tbh but I feel like Johannes had the best visual eye of all of them (though I think this one looks very good too). Raccoon city has its flaws but atleast Roberts commits to sincerity unlike Cregger

Matrix Resurrections is predominantly a comment about the incessant need of studios and the like to try and bring back franchises that should be allowed to just stay dormant, with its creator very clearly donr with touching the franchise all together.

This movie is very much a celebration and love letter to the franchise it’s based on and is gleeful with its own content without a hint of a pretentious bone in its body (and the only bit of disdain expressed in the film is toward the Umbrella scientists).

They’re fundamentally different movies with different goals in mind. Context matters, especially when concerning intent.

I havent seen welcome to raccoon city but I think adapting the actual game characters 99% of the time would not go well

think to yourself were the creators or writers of resident evil in anyway involved with this movie? Did they do any press? Did Capcom give their blessings like that. Could they or would they do the movie with Japanese actors or creators or director ?

I dont think this is the love letter to the franchise that you think it is. I think the movie was made with the goal to make money and it succeeded.

It definitely gets the characters wrong and doesn’t adapt the games story faithfully but I don’t really mind that. I think the world and tone very much feels the most resident evil of any of the movies and that’s what matters most for me.

  • Sep 21

again this same story could be told without being called resident evil

I do think Cregger had a good idea in making it the story of a character that doesnt exist in the games. I do like the feeling of this is the story of a note a mainline character would pick up or audio log. I just dont think the execution created a character I cared about. Whether that character was a self insert of a gamer experiencing it or whatever it may be.
