recency bias is kicking some peoples ass
I can see it hitting for the casuals who aren’t familiar but damn
Definitely not his best
Feel weird “shitting” on reception but it’s just funny seeing what the general audience reacts and connects to lol
If I could handle obsession could I handle this? Watched that movie damn near on mute but loved it all the same
Obsession scared the s*** out of me, this wasn’t as tense the entire time due to the comedic stuff sprinkled in there. Just a bit more graphic mans some decent body horror. You should be good
Cregger gave a spoiler interview where he talks about the themes of the film and confirms the parenthood themes peppered throughout the film, but also that the Umbrella scientists are very much a***ogous to tech developers and that their annoyingly bumbling, short sighted ways are very much intentionally lampooning those types.
Essentially, to the people who are asking Why don’t the scientists in the end deal with Bryan when he’s clearly infected, the point being illustrated is that these morons are so masturbatory about their own s\*\*\* that they become oblivious to the obvious danger that’s right in front of them, and only try to deal with it when it’s too late and already actively attacking them.

So as many of us said it’s more than a simple action movie from the director himself

I think everyone all movie is bumbling though . If everyone was taking it seriously but umbrella who caused the issue this would work better for me a bit. Because even before ai the nature of opening Pandora’s box existed . The mutation itself and “ it’s so slippery in lab people make mistakes” . The car exposition just ehhhh . When to me at least the t virus in this case felt like they were trying to cure cancer or diseases and it back fired or creating a weapon to fight other nations.
Ironically pluribus start of infection was handled so smoothly it methodically . I wish the movie was 2.5 hours if it’s a one and done to build out the world and other characters to see a bit of the downfall . But I get it shorter it is more they can show it and make money which is what clearly matters to them

He put just enough for there to be connection for him as a writer, but the film was very much conceived as an exercise in fun. He says in the interview he used the writing process for this film as sort of a breather in between writing sessions for his next film The Flood, which is a lot headier and more complex.

The f*** are you talking about it being shorter to make more money?
He had no intentions of starting a franchise or interest in building out an entire world, he wasn’t even sure it was ever gonna be made as he was writing it, all he wanted was to make a short, to the point balls to the wall roller coaster movie using the toy box of Resident Evil.
This 100% sounds like a “you problem”, choosing to not engage with what is, but what it’s not, even though there was never any intention of it being anything more than what it is.
You reject the premise itself, which is fine, but it also means it’s not really a criticism worth much salt, because it’s not really a criticism of the film not managing to achieve what it’s setting out to do.
You want a movie that was never at any point ever going to be made. It’s fanfiction essentially. It’s fine to be disappointed in that, but this is literally a case of “it is what it is.”.
Anyway, asking for a 2 and half hour RE movie is an insane expectation or want in and of itself.

I feel the Mad Max Fury Road and balls to the wall hype in previews was completely overblown. Yes there is a looming presence to get to a goal that chases them.
But HOPE which is 2 hours and 40 minutes a full hour longer than this movie flows better, better tension, horror , world leaving me wanting more . Resident Evil after many of the jokes , dialogue and writing I find myself thinking wrap this up . 28 Years later Bone Temple 1 hour 49 minutes fleshes out the characters to the necessary level to deliver its themes and humors then wraps it up.
I guess once you know something is being made does its plot get updated or do you stick with the same script as when it was never going to get made. Also mind you he said he updated the script while writing on facetime once it was going to get made to get in everything possible. The movie at times feels that of how can we write to do these set pieces.
There is intention in the themes you just listed being present in his own words . Did it execute it those themes as well as it could?
It doesnt need to be 2.5 hours to accomplish the themes well. I dont think this movie uses time well to accomplish things
0 replies to them saying they wrote this over facetime and threw in a bunch of easter eggs post production
There is a difference with playing every scenario straight or trying to be ironic. The Resident Evil games play every scenario straight out no matter how goofy it is. They take themselves serious which is why it evokes humor.
Resident Evil movie is a different thing. The humor is more the American typical Hollywood thing. Not really MCU but not that far off
!
interesting to see this discussion because its the same conversation we were having. I get it he wanted it to be the every day man going through a traumatic situation in reality while also coping with his real life goal of making money on delivery for his lover and their potential future. I do think Bryan again plays too much like a streamer going through something and saying things to a chat stream ( the audience) more than someone talking to themselves. Get it he has never fired a gun and is a video gamer. I just think in the end I didnt find myself caring that he died . We saw him develop some to find the courage to deliver the cure and want to live to be a father . He is just such a joke streamer machine that by the time the movie ends I am just like okay the cure was destroyed. We dont see Michelle even once. His potential child and michelle will live in a horrific world which they would have even if he didnt attempt to get the cure there and instead went home to deal with the serious discussion. S\*\*\* she likely wont have the child now in a zombie apocalypse lol . So what is it the tragic part he went in a rv to try to help a child essentially doomed humanity

This has been my exact sentiment in the whole thread, but that nigga still thinks I’m upset because people don’t like the movie as much as I do

Zach Cregger going on and on about this movie being a 90 minute gauntlet of death trying to reconstruct the feel of playing the game with a minimalist approach to plot and characterization with Evil Dead 2 being this films North Star, and this dude is like “I want a 2 and half hour emotional character study exploring the devastating effects of the T-Virus on people that studiously focuses on world building and establishing a rich lore.”.

There are multiple people ariculating what I am saying and both you and crimson ark are misreading. It is engagint with what is to say "okay these themes are clearly present. These story beats that evoke emoiton are clearly present but they feel like an aftethought".
Yes he didnt think it was going to get made and wrote it while writing the flood as a writing exercise. "never any intention of it being more than what it is"
directly goes against the interview where he breaks down themes and reflection of modern tech industry when I am simply saying some of the execution of themes of family, future, growing up and tech industry as well as even the "balls to the wall roller coaster" isnt executed as well as it could have been for me
no s*** my opinion is about my opinion

I dont think it accomplishes a 90 minute gauntlet of death balls to the wall that you think it does. I dont think it accomplishes the feel of playing the game . That is my opinion.
I think it feels rushed and isnt at all comparable to the highs of evil dead and what made evil dead great at all.

They feel like an afterthought because they are not the point of the movie

See, that’s an actual opinion that’s relevant as a critique to this movie. You feel like the movie doesn’t successfully accomplish what it set out to do. No arguments from me there, that’s subjective.
So this movie is like cloverfield 10?
