2-3 week window is kinda how it already is in my experience. anything that wasnt a blockbuster last year (bugonia, highest 2 lowest, etc) would only spend about that long in a nearby theater before i had to scour for another showing two cities over.

post 2020, the precedent is already there. even though anaconda is going steady, its reviews are middling at best which is another factor that dissuades audiences from checking out most average movies compared to the word of mouth quality that allowed a movie like sinners to flourish.

netflix deal going through would surely exacerbate the issue despite what they've claimed, although idk why the ulterior sentiment is to just take paramount's word for being any better when they've shown no problem shelving lucrative IP from wide release and come with the added liability of alienating viewers with regressive agenda.

The way the art scene looking this is genuinely the least of our problems. The shift to less theatrical with how current theater market looking has been inevitable . Boom of streaming also inevitable . People don’t want to be around others deal with poor service, overpriced food , parking vs safety of their home. Is it somewhat sad ? Yes but keeping a 45 theatrical window isn’t going to change much . 30-60 days max for major movies is about it .

There isn’t enough talk about again improving theaters where there are 70mm, imax , 35mm , film festivals and getting things right . When a movie ticket cost 20-30$ the cost of owning the same movie in months for infinite watches . That’s a month of streaming . Going to movies special occasion or a list . I’m for longer theatrical windows but Netflix buy or not many movie studios want to raise the value of their subscription service not of theaters where they lose a cut . This is happening in music , movies and games . Then you add in ai problems

nuanced issue. i agree w everyone else that every movie should have the opportunity for a full extended release, although its also easy to understand that thats not a guaranteed fix in a decade where theaters are virtually empty by week 5 if its not a $250 mil franchise entry or an anomaly runaway hit.

doomer attitude doesnt really achieve anything besides more pessimism about the fate of cinema, which that crowd loves to claim is already on the verge of dying. everything being the fault of netflix and streaming is such easy target-low hanging-foregone conclusion s*** atp. what needs to be focused on is the theater industry and hollywood in general not having the ingenuity to circumvent why the masses prefer said convenience in the first place. whether that's creative/financial decisions behind the scenes, the type of art they're bankrolling or negligence catering to the latest needs of an affordable communal viewer experience.

I agree in an ideal world nothing would change with theatrical windows. Netflix would better support its movies and tv shows . Continue to do in theater events . Create their own theaters in major cities and drop physicals for preservation when shows or movies leave their service or are changed . In reality how Zaslav was moving was inevitably going to have after effects . This affects Warner brothers movies games tv shows and streaming . As well as discovery . This been coming in some form for the last 5 years. Chasing those big blockbusters with big budgets , adaptations and needing films to hit a billion got them here . Milking their past franchises to dust got them here . Hogwarts legacy , Barbie , Minecraft stopped this conversation from happening much sooner but the bullet been coming their way .

I’m concerned about the amount of jobs , ai push and all industries affected by this . With it facing monopoly there is also a good chance this is stopped . All of what I am saying is simply either outcome we will be okay

Calling Disney out for ai isn’t some hot or tough take to go at Disney . Disney deals with theaters , buying up screens , buying fox and others is part of why Netflix wants to do this in the first place . All streamers just shooting at each other . People just pick and choose their favorites.
