“Nothing negative has ever come out of competition in hip hop”

But the people agreeing with OP are the ones who don’t know the history & culture?

“It’s not like its toxic S*** has always been used in a healthy way”

So you really can’t think of any negative occurrence that has happened in hip hop due to competition?

Fam im mad at myself for even letting that post get to me lol

Like how can someone say that with a straight face? Lol and some of y'all niggas actually agree with him

    Right

The people defending the We are the world BS are thinking in extremes.

Looking at someones talent or success and using that as motiviation to get on your grind is completely normal. To me thats no different than having someone you look at as an idol.

That's not the same as playing dirty to take their spot, or praying for their downfall.

Even people who collaborate find inspiration in one another to improve themselves. That's the same thing that happens when in competition mode, you're just a little more savage with it at times.

You hit it right on the head. Competition is natural when you wanna be great at something, im sure everybody thats at the top of their field probably felt like they were competing against someone at some point.

    Hiphop isnt any different

So if someone at the top of their field said otherwise, would they change your opinion b?

  • Jan 15, 2020

I just think it's stupid for people to make arbitrary comparisons of different styles of rap not meant to compete.

That person wouldn’t be at the top in the first place. You can’t be ‘the guy’ in hip hop without fighting for that spot

    Hiphop isnt any different

But what does it mean to be at the top of your field in hip hop? Or any artform?

Sales? Cuz if so thats a joke

    Grammys/awards? Again

Sold out shows? Respect of your peers?

Like in sports we all know what it means to be at the top of your field. Same with corporate America. But with art thats subjective. Only the actual artist can define to themselves what it means to be successful/what the pinnacle of success if for them.

To some rappers being Kanye/Drake/Jay Z/Em level of success is the top

To other rappers having Rakim/Nas/Black Thought level of respect is the top

you probably right i'm really thinking about it too to think of an instance where that wasn't true lol

But I'm realizing I've gotten away from the original main point of the thread which was speaking more from the fan's perspective rather than the artist

I think we as fans should stop treating art like a sport, thats really where I think it can tend to become too toxic

Nah I hear you but that’s not a big deal to me. I’m a fan of battle rap niggas will do all that then hug when it’s over because it’s not a big deal because they’ll still do what they do and they have real life outside that.

I like battle rap too but I don't see it as being the peak of rap b

I Literally agreed about healthy competition bringing the best out of artists several pages ago that doesn’t take away from what im getting at. I kno a lot of talented producers going up & they’re focused on their craft mostly. This preaching how to make it s*** from people who never have is lame

True. But this can apply to producers who go to beat battles as well. Although the "how to make it" s*** can be cringy, the music business is still a business and competitiveness is just a part of the game. Even for hobbyists there is still the element of competing with others to be heard even though it is seemingly easier to be on a platform due to the internet it is also harder due to saturation even if there is no one way "how to make it" and whether or not the intention is for them to do so which not only applies to music but just about everything.

I mean battle rap isn't as digestible as regular songs to people in general even if you took the competitiveness s*** out of the equation too tbh
