Early, I know. I didn't have plans for tonight so I watched it, although maybe I should've gone to the theaters just to watch this animation on the big screen.
The animation is only slightly better than the anime (which is already marvelous) especially the fire, water, and wind animations used for the attacks. I also liked the CGI used for the main villain. The slimey tentacles reminded me of something from Courage the Cowardly Dog because it was creepy as f***. The fights are eye catching and exciting. The music is pretty good, especially the outro song.
The movie was also surprisingly emotional. Obviously the ending is and despite knowing him for a short time, Rengoku's dramatic death scene felt earned even if I didn't cry myself. But the most emotional part was definitely the dream sequences and specifically Tanjiro's.
In the anime, we don't see Tanjiro mourn much for his family. It's a traumatic experience to have your entire family slaughtered, and this is countered in the movie by showing him a happy dream where they're all still alive. The moment where the villain shows him the nightmare where they all project his survivor's guilt is also heartbreaking. The peak of the movie is how it made me feel in those moments.
The theme of the movie for me would be resolve. This is what connects Tanjiro and Rengoku the most, they both have strong resolve, which keeps Tanjiro from falling into the trap and continuously committing suicide in the dream and keeps Rengoku later on from being tempted to live and become a demon.
I like a good villain and I thought the main antagonist was good. His plan to emotionally manipulate everyone with happy dreams - making the passengers fall asleep and then kill them, and manipulating desperate people to do his bidding, is a very clever, scummy plan so I liked it. I like his design and the eye thing, and he looked creepy as this weird worm thing. The other demon who killed Rengoku didn't have as much personality, but his battle was good so I'm ok with it.
As for flaws, the jokes weren't funny, the script feels very on the nose, most characters feel very one note except Tanjiro, these are all flaws that carry on from the anime.
The movie's plot is strong enough to carry it, and it feels like a great run of episodes. I'm glad they decided to turn this short arc into a movie because the results are stunning. This is my favorite arc so far.

If you liked the animation on your PC monitor I think you would have been blown away in the theater.

I got funimation and crunchy but have been using neither. Just gave my friends the logins so I have no reason to cancel. I need to just get back on a show but the next is jojo and thats netflix lol

Finished the LA connection arc in Great Pretender, it was fun, exciting, a little convenient but it's a good mystery
You rarely see good mystery anime so I'm excited for this, I'm also glad they spread it to mini arcs, usually when it's the same story the ending sucks
