Hathaway was pretty good. Kinda at least need to watch some past U.C timeline series to get why things are the way they are. At least I’d say Char’s Counterattack is the minimum requirement.

My question is when it's all said and done what was the story about? Because I felt like the shift in tone completely ruined it.

to me it felt like a normal coming off age story with its ups and downs

the ending left me with the same feeling the ending of Perks of Being a Wallflower did

tone shifts in anime are like spice imo

they can either add flavor or ruin it

    it's all about your taste

Really? But The Perks of being a Wallflower had closure / growth for the main character and didn't end on a cliffhanger

But they shoved it in. It didn't feel natural and didn't connect to the story so far. It actually undermined parts of the story that happened before. There were no hints or build up leading up to the big plot reveal.

    it wasnt a cliffhanger

ohto decided to keep trying....not knowing how she ended up was part of showing how pointless it is to keep reaching for end goal that might disappear

and perks ended with tunnel scene without ever the viewer's knowing what happened in the future of the protag

that's the vague beauty of youth that always leaves something to look for

if it was your average cash cow that milks it for what it's worth it could expand on its world and characters for 2 twenty-four episode seasons easily

but that would make it lose its charm in a sea of consumerism

But Perks was a complete character arc for Charlie. After gaining new friends and finally realizing and accepting his past trauma, he is now ready for the next phase of his life, something we don't need to see in the story.

If Wonder Egg Priority was consistently about accepting survivor's guilt and dealing with grief, that would've been a similar message. It also had a same thing with a group of friends that function as a foil and a support group for Ai. However, the exposition of the AI and the scientists in the final episodes takes away from the original message of the story.

Now we're introduced to this new world that doesn't have much time to be developed and instead raises many unanswered questions. And while the next episode is about Ai dealing with her own past trauma, it feels insignificant compared to the new threat and it clashes with other plot points being introduced in the episode. Finally, the special also introduces and ends plot points very quickly and unsatisfyingly, and clearly builds up to a potential second season.

This is all unlike Perks which has an open ending but it makes sense thematically because his friends leave and this chapter in Charlie's life ends.

Also, in Perks I felt like Sam and Patrick had closure and a finished character arc. This is unlike Momoe and Rika who feel like their character arc started but is now unresolved or ignored.

the parallel worlds would make character arcs insignificant since it's all tangible...like hanging from a thread. Rika is a personal fav of mine so I would like to see more of her so I feel you on that.(although neiru did get closure). The only one not getting closure I can complain about is momo. Now as far as acca and ura-acca go I think expading more on the themes they introduced would make the show less organic and more sci-fi.

Charlie's goal was making friends, finding someone to connect with, falling in love and other things that all happened....but we didnt see the evolution of the relationships he had by the end of Perks....we just saw him being happy and letting go....that's what i think the meaning of wep is....''never give up cause the you in your future will be grateful for your resolve of pushing through hardships''
