"Many of the fans actually call Symphogear “an anime that’s hard to recommend to others” (laughs), and certainly I myself think it is a strong-willed anime that’s hard to swallow, so to speak. If I were to put it into words, Symphogear is like “pork bone broth ramen.” The type that emits a strong smell that wafts from the back of the restaurant and has a flavor so rich you get addicted to it. For people who just glance at it, the hurdle seems too high and it’s certainly not a flavor that everyone would like, and yet for those that do like it they simply just can’t get enough of it. I think the fans have embraced that part of Symphogear" - Akifumi Kaneko, co-creator and script writer of Symphogear
The concept of magical girls wearing power armour and using the power of song to fight eldritch monsters might be too weird for a lot of people to even consider, but for the staff of Symphogear it was the coolest damn thing in the world. The show is well aware of how over-the-top and cheesy it is, but it stays fully committed to being its own weird little thing. It was a passion project.
That passion shines through in various ways. Concepts for new monsters drawn by the voice actors during their live shows were included in subsequent seasons, no matter how silly they were. Animators were given complete freedom to conceptualize and animate their favourite girl's transformation sequence, no matter how elaborate they got. Tidbits like those are why I have such a high opinion of the franchise despite its flaws: it has soul.
The staff's passion resulted in an equally passionate fan base. There's no social clout for liking Symphogear. You're not joining others in watching the currently trendy show. You're not watching an agreed upon classic and building up an image of being a patrician anime watcher. The only reason to be in the Symphogear fan base is because you like what the show brings: fun, ridiculous, over-the-top action and plot. That's what the fans are there for, and I wish I was there with them when the show was airing.
I wish I was there when Tsubasa rode a giant rocket-propelled sword into a laser cannon.
I wish I was there when Hibiki punched the moon.
That's just the first season alone; it somehow gets crazier as the series goes on.
Man, I wish I was there for everything.
As a person who never cares about participating in seasonal discussion, the feeling of missing out that Symphogear inspired in me is a testament to the show itself. Goodbye, Symphogear, you were soulful as f***.
this s*** getting weirder every episode
I like how the mc is honest and direct about his horniness
mans be like “yes I’m staring at your legs and it’s making me hard”
his little sister weird asl tho
They want to attract the loser otaku audience
might fw this after saekano

I loved this anime when I started it, but it’s frustrating how long it takes the main couple to get together so keep that in mind
Other than that, the art is pleasant the jokes are funny the characters are fun (especially her two friends) and it’s really wholesome

Meh I find shows are better when it takes longer for the couple to get together. Way more room for drama as well as more fun scenarios
Like HoriMiya they get together so quick and then it just runs out of steam and there’s just not much else to explore
komi cant communicate bout to be a banger
gonna need this in anime ASAP sounds fire

Glad I waited on reading it
Eighty-Six has some great storyboarding, or maybe I'm just a sucker for match cuts.

It’s good to an extent. When it’s obvious both characters want each other and it feels like misunderstandings are pushed into the plot it’s annoying.
One of the things I liked about Horimiya is how there aren’t a lot of misunderstandings and petty drama. However that did make the main couples relationship “too perfect” so you gotta have balance.

me too I just saw a couple yt vids on it and it already piqued my interest

same
komi sounds like a mix of hachiman and yukino
what else could I ask for??

yeah i mean it depends on what is keeping them from not being with one another. Misunderstandings is definitely an annoying aspect in some rom com anime, but theres def a good amount of anime that have played with other ideas to make the drama compelling and feel authentic enough. Golden Time imo kinda made things work with the couple getting together early on because of some other angles being able to create a compelling drama. But in HoriMiya, there isn't really anything like that and overtime you're kinda just watching a typical couple just being typical lol. Which can work sometimes but in anime format, thats just dull especially when there is nothing to really get from it.

I think I’ll take a break from the Rom/Com SoL after Saekano and Lovely Complex

I've enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. It's pretty good.
