I need a baseline for you taste for respective genres. If Mushoku Tensei is a 1/10 for Isekai, then what do you have as the standard?

Same for AoT s4, what is the baseline when comparing it to its contemporaries?

Think it's one of those things people will really like or really hate.

I loved getting all the background on the characters and the set up for the finale at the end, but I can understand why someone who watched Re:Zero Season 1 maybe would have been expecting more than one story arc than just the overarching focus on the Sanctuary for 25(?) 30 minute episodes.

I think in recent years these statistics have recently mostly evened out with the rest of world (at least per capita), so Japan isn't really that far off from the west in terms of suicide rate.

Given, I think alot of the first world has a suicide issue considering how alot of people perceive depression/other mental health issues.

I'm like 10/13 episodes through Horimiya, and it just feels like nothing happens or that if something does happen it's resolved in the next 5 minutes anyway.

It's not.. bad, I guess, but I don't go episode-to-episode wondering what's going to happen next or how a certain scenario will play out, because everything is solved so quickly.

I don't know how we wanna handle genres for this question because defining something as "isekai" is broad as hell. I consider it more of a setting than a genre.

My favourite "transported to another world and can't escape" isekai is KonoSuba (8/10). My favourite "transported to another world and can leave at any time" isekai is Bofuri (8/10). Those are both very different than MT though because they're more comedic and lighthearted. For an isekai closer in tone to MT, my favourite isekai would be Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (6/10).

I don't know what AoT4's contemporaries would be. Battle shounens I guess? If that's the case, it would be Hunter x Hunter (8/10). Just action shows in general? Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai (9/10)

I wanted to explain my ranking a little bit. You’ll notice I also put InuYasha and SAO on the list even though romance isn’t the main focus of the story in these two. But since it’s heavily prevalent in both I decided to rank them.

SAO’s 4/10 ranking isn’t just for the romance, it’s mainly for the dumbed down story and characters. I did think the romance was shallow too but it was definitely a big part of the anime.

InuYasha has good romance, this aspect and the character interactions is what kept me watching it, it’s mainly the plot being dragged out that gets it that 7/10.

I always see twitter or Instagram posts raving about Bunny Girl’s main couple’s relationship, quoting from the anime. I did think it was worth mentioning from a romance standpoint. I do think the romance is a highlight of the anime, but the harem aspect of it undermines it, and the likability of the main boy who thinks he’s very smart. Since I’m not a teenager I don’t really think he’s that special. I also didn’t like the quotes.

Finally I also noticed I missed some movies. Wolf Children’s romance is adorable even though falling in love with wolf man is stupid, but they made it really emotional. It’s the best part of the film.

I also didn’t mention Ghibli movies. The most romantic one I watched was Howl’s Moving Castle which to me is a perfect movie, but not because of the romance which was mostly metaphorical imo.

There’s a lot to say about Bakemonogatari. I gotta say the whole style of animation and writing wasn’t for me, which is exactly what people love about it. It’s also undeniably creative. But I just didn’t like it. I only watched this and Nisemonogatari, which was worse. My friend told me to watch everything but I’d rather watch something else. I also hate the main character here.

This is interesting you name the first world tho, where they actually (have time to) worry bout mental health. In the 3rd world they don't even care bout it for multiple reasons. Are the suicide stats even higher there, or their numbers aint correct cause not enough capacity (same w covid for example)?
