Database scores don't really tell you anything except for the specific tastes of the site's largest demographic. The more you align with the site's demographic the more you end up agreeing with everything's score. MAL's demographic is full of western teenage boys and young adult men so you're gonna get certain genres and elements on top of the charts every time.

It's why s*** like the Idolmaster has scores which rank it outside the top 1000 even though the franchise is a juggernaut in Japan. Western teenage boys/young adult men generally don't like shows with majority female cast and anything that doesn't look "mature.'

Also, I think sequels of long running shows taking up a ton of high spots is natural. Everyone who didn't like the franchise in the first place didn't bother watching the rest of the seasons so the only people rating it are the ones who liked it in the first place.

tl;dr: publicly aggregated scores are lame

the ending is the most edgy stuff I've seen in anime

the premise and the whole assassin organizations in a corrupt govt is a cool concept but executed like that is just a horrible attempt like trying to lose weight by eating burgers and drinking diet coke

i just finished Akame Ga Kill! and i’m lowkey wondering why some people like that s*** so much it is a well made/pretty decently animated show, and it’s even enjoyable enough for a while, but it gets so melodramatic and corny about halfway in it really kills any momentum the ending should’ve had.

It's also about HOW stuff is rated

for example if we had to score JJK or fujimoto's work many of us would give em at least a 7-8 each rn but that's in an age where that stuff is genuinely fresh

2 years from now if 3000 users go ''these were trend setters but so much stuff is better atm'' and give em scores below 5 the ratio would get messed up

the demographic sure is important too but most of us dont watch the same stuff ppl in our age groups or social standing do....good or bad take it as you like we're in a digital hype era

I never thought about dates that certain shows get rated

Personally, I'm cool with certain shows fading into irrelevancy if they don't age well though.

Dragon ball aged well cause all millenials like myself got good memories of it. Same s*** will happen when one piece ends...

but who will give a damn about konosuba or land of the lustrous 10 yrs from now?? or to be fair since I mentioned shonen, what about demon slayer or tog??

even aot is on a thin line depending its ending like it hasnt already given us enough entertainment but that's a whole different topic

That's why I never liked rating shows. I cant put a number on years worth of work that I dont even know how it will affect me on the future

I think that's an interesting thing to think about.

I think the mainstream friendly cultural icons will definitely be remembered even if they end up being s*** (e.g., Sword Art Online being one of the most watched shows and still often mentioned even though it has an absurdly low score on MAL). KonoSuba, Demon Slayer, and AOT reached the level of popularity to fit in here I think.

Niche "elitist" type shows will also be remembered imo. But only by certain people who are the ones who dive that deep into anime in the first place. Stuff like Haibane Renmei is always brought up among more experienced anime watchers. I can see Land of the Lustrous fitting into that category.

I'm fine with rating shows. Its just a number that represents how much I liked it, and I update my ratings every year anyways.

Sword art online is actually very well-received in japan and at some cases the only anime people there watch like naruto was for the west

as much as I hate the elitist ways I honestly might be one myself lol. Not in the form of toxic hate and obscure fandom but more towards the fact that I like looking for diamonds in dirt. That moment when you realise you found something good in s*** is rewarding...yikes

I'm not ''above'' rating shows or anything. It's just my thought process is simple after I finish a show, it's the ''did I enjoy it or not'' type. Same goes for music and all forms of entertainment

Even though I use the word elitist to refer to those diamonds in the rough type shows, I really only use that because the general anime community refers to any shows outside the mainstream and the people who watch those shows elitist. I consider people who dig that deep to find those shows to be people who happen to be very invested in the medium.

The toxic hate that you referred to is what I consider to be elitist. Looking down on others because of what they watch and like is pretty lame. I honestly find the mainstream watchers act more elitist than people who watch those diamond in the rough "elitist" shows lol.
