Hot take shinkai is overrated as hell, every movie is, for a lack of a better term, tear bait, kinda like your lie in april and violet evergarden
That’s why we love them
I wouldn't say its not aimed at kids just because it tackles more serious topics. Hugtto! PreCure has topics such as motherhood and raising a child, but its still a kids show. I still think HxH is for the most part a kids show, though I will acknowledge that HxH did start moving away from being a kids show after it moved into a late night time slot instead of early weekends.
You are the making a mistake if you actually think Shonen Jump is for kids nowadays. Most of its readership nowadays is 18+. Kids in Japan read CoroCoro.
OP’s biggest demographic is 30+. KnY, JJK are also mostly 20+.

Nah, they're just movies to get a good cry and nothing else, when i finish one of his movies i go on with my day like nothing happened, unlike movies like perfect blue, akira and princess mononoke that still blow my mind years after i watched them
even if HxH was for kids from the start it definitely drifted away from that demographic later on with the chimera ant arc - the dark themes and mature violence is one thing but most importantly kids are not gonna tolerate that narrator lmao

Shonen jump releases manga catered towards young boys, so more or less to teenagers from 12 to 18 year olds. This is just a category, more correctly the recommended category for readers. Manga that end up on shonen jump and shonen magazines in general end there cause the publisher find that certain manga to be more for teens than adults for example, even tho its not exclusive to children. In the end publishers use these categories just to have a magazine to release manga on and we westerners shouldnt even care about the shonen label since we don't have magazines like shonen jump but tankobons

It really doesnt matter in the end, devilman is a shonen but it gets as gory as berserk. Just read/watch everything that interests you without caring about whether its a shonen/shojo/seinen/josei

Unless our definitions of "most" is different than its more of a 50/50 split.

Yeah. I just wanted to say that there is a big difference between the audience of for example, Doraemon and One Piece. Shonen is more of a general "genre" than anything. Even the gender is mostly 50/50 for most series.
And yeah, all those tags don’t really matter that much nowadays. Especially bc of the internet age, anything can get popular if its good.

I count 16-18year old already as grown up in the sense that their taste is pretty developed and they can consume sexual and gory stuff.
Bc you mentioned PreCure, i thought you were speaking more of primary grade kids.
There are statistics out there which i didn’t save unfortunately for each series and the age / gender distribution of those. JJK for example is not popular with grade schoolers at all. Jump at this point is more of a 'for everyone' magazine. They pander to Fujoshis as much as little kids or edgy teens.

Doraemon isnt a shonen, its a kodomo which is targeted towards kids, but i get your point. Shonen aint even a genre, for example one punch man is a seinen although a lot of people label it as a shonen. We should just forget the term shonen, it doesnt involve us
The Yu Yu Hakusho watch begins
im near the end of the dark tournament myself

Ima peep it after I finish BECK
