Depending on who you talk to, whether it's okay or not to use the word varies. Academically, it tends to be universally accepted to refer to them interchangeably as Native Americans or American Indians. Some groups of natives refer to themselves as Indians, some don't.

When I studied the various indigenous groups in college, this discussion came up and that was basically what I was told by my professor when I inquired about which words to use when referring to Native Americans/American Indians.
