pitchfork said 6 was average. i remember 2012-2013 so many 9.0-10’s were dropping

That’s cuz pitchfork is an indie rock publication I’m in its roots fundamentally it’s there, the early 10s had a LOT of indie and rockist influence everywhere. They had a much more unified vision then too it was its prime, was a much more like big respected publication back then ppl would acc go there for recs more. P sure they have wayy more staff now too from dif spectrums too so the scores are more dif ends of spectrum

Alphones is their like trump card rage bait guy they pull out for a lot of big releases for press

So if somebody that looked like this were to give DMX Its Dark and Hell Is Hot album a 2 out 10 we're supposed to just accept that as valid? A picture speeaks a thousand words.

thats the entirety of this website f*** are you talking about

Like Fantano says: "Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?"

It’s just such a s***ty cop out because your just deflecting all criticism ass an influential figure who’s opinion matters and YOU profit off the influence of it. People can criticize the way you critique things your literally making ur living off your ability to. That’s why people have issues with fantano, he prides himself on being one of the most influential critics of the past 15 years yet deflects all criticism by saying “it’s my opinion tho” like yea the way you approach your critiques can be harmful or ill informed

This is what im taklin bout like at some point all rap can't be mid. The reviewers just come off as tasteless.

Tbh other than alphonse, pitchfork has a lot of great writers actually, some of the best reviews you will find on the internet are pitchfork reviews a lot of them are amazing and their best new music is always great to check out. I acc think it’s still probably the best publication for music critique. They have a lot of talented writers from dif ends of the spectrum that rly can be a great match for what they are reviewing, I prefer it to the single critic format actually

  • Jul 12, 2025

A lot of Alphonse criticisms for this album r understandable tho like i def see where he’s coming from, but also some are just PR bullshit about how things look or the fact there are disses which is dumb

hes been ten toes down on this opinion thing since before he got in any way famous or influential. look at you being hurt over products of imagination. tell me how in the long term it was harmful towards MIKE that fantano doesnt care for him. whos career he ruined, who got it so wrong it massively impacted their life?

theres this group twitching tongues and fantano somewhat infamously tore them apart many years ago in his review. the frontman of that band now hosts one of the most popping hardcore/heavy music shows on youtube while also keeping the band active

I’m not saying a fantano review cripples someone career but he is a very influential big figure and he brags about it and makes a point of it, what your doing is just finding any cop out to make someone immune from critcism.

These people have their jobs and serve important roles in the artform for influence, the point of their job that someone like fantano who makes millions off is criticism. It’s completely okay if people critique the way they criticize music.

When I say harmful I mean not just to careers but it’s moreso towards attitudes towards music, music discourse, and narratives right. Just because fantano says that doesn’t mean it absolves him of any critique of what he does, he can still be a bad critic. The existence of the critic as a relevant figure necessitates a hierarchy to work as sort of gatekeepers that definetely influence music access narrative and opinion. People care about the art yea

I saw someone on twitter calling him "unprofessional" lol ngl I think it's cool to critique reviews but people should be critiquing the writing itself, especially since it should be common knowledge by now that pitchfork writers dont pick the score on their own

but unfortunately i think people tend to miss the point when it comes to reviews

nobody is skipping out on the clipse album because pitchfork gave it a 6.6 though

The issue can also just be with the metric someone is critiquing with and their criticisms aside from how they write it, feel like the issue people have with Pierre is a lot of his criticisms are rooted in fundamental biases that are so strongly like not about the musical experience and it generally feels very mean spirited, attention seeking, and negative. To me especially the negative and mean spirited parts. He’s not rly like enthusiastic to explore the nuances of the album or the things he loves in music it seems weirdly cynical and negative.
