Honestly this sounds really interesting, I might check it out soon. What topics did you think would have been good to know beforehand
I remember there being references to a lot of Mexican historical figures along with the cultural significance of certain things and even the cultural identity struggles with Spain's conquest and its aftermath/influence. Stuff like that that I feel like I'd need to read a book on Mexican history, lol.
Inarritu said the film isn't autobiographical, but there are a lot of similarities and that's why it feels more personal. The big thing being that the main character is a Mexican journalist and documentary film maker that feels almost guilty for "making it" and leaving behind his home country for the US and having a fragmented identity no longer belonging to either it as Mexico is vastly different than when he last lived there.
Not really a spoiler, but maybe you're like me and find the less details the better so this might undermine it but what stuck with me the most was the axolotls serving as an easy to understand metaphor. The main character's son has pet axolotl, which are native to the lakes near Mexico city, and he tries to take them to the US but ultimately they die because it's not their natural habitat. Paralleling the cultural identity.
But yeah, it's a shame it was an under-appreciated movie, maybe it was best as it was made for a specific audience.
@op some update
“This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f***ing impressed and happy … He gives himself. He has an incredible sense of passion. It’s a brutal comedy. It’s a wild comedy of human nature. It’s scary and funny. It’s beautiful. I will start editing next week … It was a very challenging film, you will see. It’s many borders of many things.” - Alejandro
Part of me thought Alejandro and Tom would end up deathly hating each other and clashing on set, because Alejandro sounds like a demon who runs hell-sets and Tom is an uptight by-the-books pent up insane person actor who doesn't want a single liability making things hectic
but they may have cooked

i always though it was interesting inarritu, baumbach and chazelle all followed their huge late 2010s with covid era gigantic budget misfires, and are now 5-6 years into the next decade starting to reemerge. they all kinda ended up on the same trajectory by accident. hope this does better for inarritu then jay kelly did for baumbach. tom cruise doing character acting again with a weirdo auteur is exciting
DIGGER @op
https://twitter.com/TomCruise/status/2001683996699459840that poster is so hard. will be seated!
miss Iñárritu in his crime thriller bag honestly , remember watching bardo with my dad & him telling me there’s something wrong with me for even putting that on
This is prob gonna be their OBAA of next year. Shot on VV 35mm, IMAX screenings, big lead and pretty much same release window.
Aspect ratio of that trailer makes it seem like they're going for 1:43 for the full runtime as well.

I think Inarritu's fine. This is his 2nd release in 11 years and Bardo felt very much like him going on his own tangent without pressure. Netflix didn't help him much and i don't think it was actually a big budget. His 2014-2015 was so overwhelming that you can pass it off imo.
Now he's back to take the crown.
