Think this is my 4th Madge album that I've listened to. Now seeing prior that some people considered this her best album I went in with a bit of expectations of what sound truly defines her whole. Especially with this being released in 1998 her last album of the 90s. One of the sounds that quite defines the late 90s/early 00s to me is that very "futuristic" rock sound that artist such as Beck and Gorillaz used. It's like a very energetic warm guitars accompanied by looping synths (?) and the drumming is dancy and upbeat. Pair that with that Euro hypnotic techno 00s sound and that's majority of this album.

This album opens up so beautiful with this spiritually soothing song in drowned world/substitute for love. When she starts singing "my face of you, my substitute for love" over that guitar and then the drums and bass come in shi had me

I rlly wish there was another song like that on the album but none came that close. Now following this we start getting the sound i was describing above with Stars. Twangy guitars and hypnotic synths or whatever da hell that sound is. Since it's track 2 I'm still hm okay Madge but as we get over the following tracks I began to enjoy it a lil less. (Perhaps 1st oof) The title track Ray of Light doesn't quite do it for me, it has parts tht i like but overall it drags and feels like it doesn't kno what it wants to rlly do.

Candy perfumed girl is trip-hop done boring and Skin is a euro techno dance pop sound that i rlly dont like of that point in time. but funny enough I do like it on Sky fits heaven and Nothing Really matters. Those are bops done right in that sound.

Now after these there's well..an interesting song to say the least and i can confidently say the worst one on the album. I have no idea what she was thinkin with Shanti. It's giving M.I.A but white and lowkey cultural appropriation.

Drums go hard atleast. Anw we get an absolute palate cleanser with Frozen. You're frozennn when you're hearts not opennnnn

Sadly that's where this ends for me too. Up until the closer the songs blend in or overstay their welcome. The final track to me is a bit interesting cause while I'm not too fond of it it still serves as a good way to end this album. The quiteness that keeps building up as she sings about running away and reflecting on her spiritually surroundings. Ending on "I ran I ran and I'm still running away" feels soothingly poetic.

If I were to rank it among the other Madge albums I've listened it'd be prolly my 3rd fav behind her first two.

    Overall 6-6.5/10
    Fav songs:
    Substitute for love
    Frozen
    Nothing Really Matters
    Sky Fits Heaven

Last week I specifically said I was anti rock at the moment and this guy really gave me a textbook emo punk tape

You should be jailed for giving me this tape with the vocals on the pure screamo part of the album luckily the vocalist (idk who it is) pops what I’m assuming is an antipsychotic and makes some really nice sexy songs like deftones in betweeen putting his psychosis on tape .

    Best songs
    Crystal lake
The. Opinionated are so opionated (emotional interlude)
A)The View from Here Is...B) A Brick Wall

Textbook screamo this is what new gen ragers think they be doing on stage nowadays

    Just listened to this rn.

This is something I would've went crazy over in high school. very watery, shoegaze/dream pop sound. Reminds me of a nautical version of slowdive. The production is very serene, cocteau twins vibes. Really love the plate reverbs and the vocals.

Overall though, personally I've burnt myself out on this sound. But thank you for the rec anyways cause this is a good album. but it all blends together for me, it's not a sequencing problem it's just the sonics and I used to spam that s*** lmfao. I don't really have a favorite stand out track unfortunately.

    I'll give u a recommendation in a bit.

Does NOT work for me. the juxtaposition between the production and her vocals just doesn’t hit for me. Hate her pronunciation of zombies on the chorus

Like the potential is there then she starts singing lmao

real. never really liked Zombie although i like their other main hits a lot. its straight up annoying to me in the chorus

    SWV - New Beginning

I kinda wish I had more interesting things to say about this album but I don't know that much about 1990s R&B although I do enjoy it, so it's harder for me to tell what specifically makes this album/SWV unique.

That being said I think this album was overall a solid listen and does feature a few things that are prominent in the R&B that I do like a lot. Those elements being the female vocals, harmonies and groove-oriented sound on a lot of tracks. This album definitely feels like it's fully out of the new jack swing era of a few years before (I'm sure this applies to most 1996 R&B to be fair) and I feel a lot of hip-hop esque choices in the production which I like a lot. Feel like a lot of the instrumentals could be altered just a bit and would end up sharing a lot of commonalities with some of my preferred sounds in 1990s hip hop. A lot of really solid basslines and drum patterns that my favorite songs on here rely on. Also enjoyed having a random Erick Sermon verse jumpscare me. Vocal performances I found really solid also for both the lead and backing vocals which again seems pretty typical for an album like this. I think the album flows reasonably well and everything fits together, I don't really like criticizing albums from this era as too long because that's just part of the format even though I did find some stretches of the album significantly better than others. Whole thing is pretty good to me with few strong highlights that reach the next level.

Favorite songs were Use Your Heart which I already knew and is amazing, then probably Whatcha Need and You're the One. My least favorites tended to be the songs that feel like more of a pure R&B sound to me with less hip hop and pure pop influence if that makes sense. Ones like You Are My Love and I'm So in Love which have a slower, gushy, lovey dovey feel to them with lots of vocals all over the place which I do respect but just don't vibe with as much.

I've only heard it twice so far and don't really like trying to rate with that few listens but I'd give a 7.5/10 on first impression

Some it gets kind of samey, but I really don't mind that. You can kind of just melt into the album experience. I've listened to Velocity : Design : Comfort quite a bit, so I was excited to check this one out. The standouts for me were Fish, Follow Me, Starlife and Jelly Charm.

Appreciate the rec, will definetly spin this again in the future

Edit: I think Jelly Charm is my favorite on here for sure. Instant add.

Afrociberdelia by Chico Science & Nação Zumbi

this album was released in 1996, and absolutely sounds like it. overall, it reminds me of songs i’d hear in the backgrounds of movies from the 90’s where something pivotal is happening or you’re introduced to a cool character.

this is definitely out of my comfort zone of genre, which is good for me because i’m trying to expand my musical taste. i like how this blends a lot of different genres into one — the first song hopping from rock to the drums kicking in reminds me of something Gorillaz would’ve done in their first album.

listening to this made me wanna research the artist / album (because admittedly I’m NOT familiar at all) and this sounds way ahead of its time for 1996. it’s extremely funky and i saved a few songs to come back to. i’ll probably be listening to this for awhile trying to absorb everything because a few run throughs isn’t enough for me to appreciate everything

    favorite songs:
    corpo de lama
    mateus enter
    enquanto o mundo explode

(Original Pirate Material is a UK Rap album by The Streets from 2002)

Feel like my exposure so far to UK music has been Burial and some assorted jungle tracks, never really heard much UK rap, let alone a whole album. Ended up thoroughly enjoying this one though.

The flows are done well and the lyrics paint a pretty good image of urban British life like on Has It Come To This? and Don't Mug Yourself.

The tracks with deeper topics work for me too like the track Weak Becomes Heroes. I really f/w this sentiment about finding (albeit sometimes temporary) community through dancing at clubs and was gonna speculate about how this track probably inspired Fred Again...and then I clicked on The Streets' most recent releases and saw that him and Fred did a track 3 years ago lol

Pretty solid production also, the inclusion of a house/garage instrumental or sampling some reggae make this album feel distinctly British in a way that I really like. I'd say the instrumental on It's Too Late is where it shines the most

As far as drawbacks, there are some tracks that aren't as compelling lyrically like Too Much Brandy. The choruses can be a little weak at times too like on It's Too Late.

Also I respect the stance on weed legalization via the juxtaposition against alcoholism on Irony Of It All but it's hard to not think of it as like a well-crafted political radio ad. Vote Yes on Proposition 99!

Overall though, really good listen. Honestly might be my favorite album recommended to me here on KTT. Will be returning to a couple of tracks on this, hell might even give the whole thing a relisten soon.

Faves: Weak Becomes Heroes, Stay Positive šŸ«‚, Has It Come To This?

Least faves: Too Much Brandy, Irony of it All

real af. was kinda worried about recommending a foreign language album but glad you enjoyed it. that album and their first 1 is insane and both super amazing and creative imo. when theyve got some funk and hip hop stuff combining with multiple brazilian genres and then you hear some metal guitar riff come in its just crazy

and yeah i think it is a little ahead of its time and its definitely important/influential in the context of Brazilian music

Sounds very early 2000’s but in a good way

Not my favorite lyrics but the production on this is pretty great stuff

Will probably have to relisten to soak it all in

Some tracks on here brought me back and reminded me of classic ass songs like rollout by Luda

Timbalands production doesn’t get brought up as often nowadays but he definitely has classics under his belt

This was a good album to experience as a fan of his Ty

    @Extraterrestrial

Going into this, I knew it is regularly thrown around as one of the best albums of all time. and the cover is iconic, ive seen it everywhere on posters and t shirts growing up. It was exciting to finally listen to it, but i was a bit like overwhelmed at its status. because when albums are as prestigious as this, I like to give it a good few listens and let it unravel for me.

I expected it to be more straight rock and roll. But was surprised this sounds like proto shoegaze, but with clear vocals. the sounds all mesh together and create this wall of sound with a great atmosphere. Sounds so nostalgic and still original. It’s a real time capsule for an era.

I loved this album. a lot. once it hit love song i was fully in. the whole thing was building up and building up and then when u hit disintegration. holy. just awesome. that was my favourite part.

Love that the songs are long so they can breath, love that theres is long instrumental parts. love the writing. very happy to finally listen to them and begin my cure journey. cant wait to give it more listens and let rest of it unfold for me

This is an album I’d always been meaning to listen to but never got around to, and I really enjoyed it.

I love the production on The Velvet Rope, it’s deep and dark in a way that really appeals to me, but still super polished. Everything blends together really smoothly, but each track pulls from different influences so it never feels repetitive. There’s a mix of stripped back, moody moments and more groove heavy sections that keep it interesting the whole way through. It feels layered and intentional, like the more you listen, the more details you start to pick up.

Regarding the lyrical content, it’s a good mix of personal and social themes, especially on ā€œFree Xone.ā€ I also really liked ā€œYouā€ and ā€œTogether Again,ā€ which ended up being my favourites.

I did think it was slightly too long, but there are far more good songs than boring ones on this record.

Overall I think this album is great and I’ll definitely keep coming back to it.

    8.5/10

Yeah even though with Janet's music I'm generally more of a Rhythm Nation guy I do think there is something uniquely vulnerable about this album that makes me want to come back to it more often

and when I do yeah I usually end up having a new favorite song or new appreciation for a track that I wasn't feeling that much before

I think Empty is my current fave, that juke instrumental while singing about loneliness while online is just so damn good

and Got 'Til It's Gone has grown on me cause at first I wasn't feeling the sample but I think it fits the lyrical vibe of the song, and just that kinda minimal, stripped-back vibe of the whole album that you mentioned

also shout-outs to Go Deep, I love the groove on it even if some of the sound effects are a little corny

that fuccin "boingggg" that comes in before verse 2 loool
