SynopsisHitler used self determination as his justification for annexing Poland and part of Czechoslovakia lol. Nationalism is a cancerous ideology and is exclusionary by its nature
i'm not saying everything is moral just because of a similar justification. saying that something is bad because someone did x and justified it with that something is a reductionist way of looking at things. there's obviously far more nuance to it than that.

You can't have nationalism without exclusion. It wouldn't be nationalism otherwise

exclusion isn't an inherently violent or racist action though. for example, nationalism has been used a rally against imperialism, or a means of unification across different cultures under one banner

Nationalism doesn't have to mean supremacy as much as it does primarily promoting the interests of a national collective at its forefront. While it has most commonly been interpreted in racist ways of course, I think it's disingenuous to say it can't function without racism. Nationalism doesn't have to mean violently exclusionary policies, it can also manifest in forms of sovereignty, self-determination, or cultural renaissance/identity. Would you say that anti-imperalist nationallism is racist for example?
Cultural identity usually means supremacy and racism. Nationalism could probably function without racism or supremacy but it hasn't because the people who promote nationalism don't want it to be that way. Nationalism always comes during times of turmoil and blames everyone else for the problems. So yeah, you might be right but you really can't give an example of any form of nationalism that has actually been implemented and didn't advocate for racism or supremacy.
I would say there are two forms of anti-imperialist nationalism that I am familiar with. One definitely isnt racist but has racists adopting the ideology. The other has people who might not be racist but adopt racist rhetoric.

A lot of those instances resulted in hatred towards western civilization or the western world. And not all of those came from anti-imperialist tendencies.
Like obviously colonialism + USSR caused ethnic groups to lose their sovereignty but tbh most of those ethnic groups didn't have a country even before colonialism really took over.

But this was because the western world was actively trying to sabotage the governments or people in question? It's not like everyone was playing nice and then they just threw a temper tantrum. Especially in the case of Indian nationalism you literally had someone come in forcibly eject culture, spit on the religion and norms of society, and arbitrarily split up your region and tribes, then be told you're the bad guy for wanting to isolate yourself

I mean yeah but people are emotionally moronic and dont stop at blaming a few people and blame the entire ethnic group or worse an entire region of the world. Stereotypes are a b****. Were they partially justified in their reactions? Of course. Still doesn't mean it's an excuse.

I just think it depends. I don't endorse any type of nationalism which incurs violence or "retribution" but I don't think nationalism whose aim is simply unification or renaissance is inherently bad

I would support a Medicare for all that only includes people under 40. I’m done subsidizing all these old people until they forgive my college debt, till then they can be sick
