Thoughts on the Iowa caucus this year?

What do you mean? It was definitely a complete and total s*** show in every way possible in terms of the Iowa Democratic Party's running of it, and Iowa should certainly never be an early voting state in future primaries as a result of their complete failure.

But do I think it was a major reason that Bernie lost the nomination? No. His momentum was sky high after the Nevada Primary. So any momentum he didn't end up getting from Iowa (which wouldn't have been huge, since he barely won it), he eventually got later on anyway.

Imo there were 3 main reasons why Bernie lost:
    1) His supporters just didn't show up to the polls (by far the biggest reason).
    2) His campaign made some mistakes in terms of strategy.
    3) Clyburn and other establishment endorsements of Biden around the time of and after South Carolina.

What you gonna do when you show up to vote in November and realize his name's not on the ballot?

Run to the polls in my 350s of course

If you really think that, then IDK what to tell you. The vast majority of his supporters will happily vote for Biden just as they did Hillary. You’re really living in a bubble.

    Look at the comments guys

im starting to think these +10 polls for biden are slightly inflated. The amount of hate/apathy i see for biden in my circle of 18-22 yr olds is unmatched and also in the broader under 35 demo as well. Its staggering.

I remember 2016 very well and there was never this much vitrol towards clinton. I remember some friends roasting pokemon go to the polls but they were one or two edgy white kids. Bidens dissatisfaction stretches to apolitical poc in a way Hillary never did. Like my generation isn’t dumb, we’ve researched his record. We’ve seen the ghoulish things he’s done. Anyway November will be interesting

We might see the lowest under 30 turnout or the lowest proportion of that vote ever carried by a dem. He can still win ofc but if im a dnc leader im scared af for the next 5-15 years

This has been mentioned to death, but once again, younger turnout is and always has been regularly poor. That demographic is not what polls are based on.

That generation has also seen the ghoulish things Trump's done and pretty universally hate him and want him out.

But again, their turnout is hardly any campaigns major concern.

And basing these things on the comments of an instagram post, already leaning a particular way, is setting yourself up for failure

    Im aware of this

    I said 5-15 years

You think my 20 year old friends will lose their ideology when their 35 and start becoming a more solid middle age voting block?

Also man we’re in different times. Climate catastrophe anxiety is a real thing. Anger at white supremacy amd inequality. The protests and blm as a group show a way more politically engaged young demographic since vietnam Atleast. It’s hard to measure these things since it’s every 4 years but in a couple years we should be able to see a better trend line. Plus young voters hvnt had any candidates worth voting for in 10+ years

Ofc trump/republican hate is a given no need to state that

The republican party has been cancelled since eternity in the minds lf younger folks but the story is that the democratic party is losing credibility alarmingly fast and it’s long overdue imo

It’s not far-fetched. Tons of old hippies and radicals from the 60’s and 70’s vote Dem nowadays.

Well generally as people get older their values tend to shift towards more conservative.

Obviously this can't be gauged to a tee.

Climate anxiety, inequality and race issues have all been on the agenda to portion of the demographic tracing back 40 odd years. Sure its more vocalized now and rightly so. Whether that will translate into momentous political engagement remains to be seen.

Younger votes have always set themselves up for failure. By simply not voting enough their vote is worth less and their views are less represented.

I wouldnt say the Democratic party is losing credibility. Political engagement has never been great for starters.

But beyond that there are a lot of exciting, progressive and younger candidates in the party gaining momentum and trying to spur change.

Its just a matter of maintaining that momentum and thats far from easy and is a problem that has been faced time and time again, and is not unique to the US.
