i am talking from a general perspective of mainstream rap fans idc if rap is the biggest genre mach hommy is top3 fav rapper for me. music discovery would be nice with the internet but people still want the machine to feed em. and if they want that then you have to look at who the machine is pushing and seeing how that is linked with current mainstream politics
I mean yea in art people will sometimes just listen to what’s easily accessible to them but that’s a type of person
U have to actively try to be that in this era where u will randomly be given a new song in ur ears if u finish the album and all ur friends have listening status and playlists and ur going out and like seeing everyone talk about stuff
The reality is music taste and personal music exploration is at a height because EVERYOEN can all music has crazy reach and most people have their own gumbo of things they like. Rap is still the biggest genre yes and rappers do well commercially compared to the rest of the entire artform, pop music relies even more on legacy acts than rap it’s just rap has stabilized in its whole high turnover youth culture thing to their standards.
Truth is s*** just levels out because everyone is on streaming now while rap listeners dominated streaming cuz they were younger so now the share levels out also cuz of fatigue, so u still have rap at the top but also room for other genres. Pop is literally like in its structure way more integrated in the industry with easier marketing big budget and less independent artists it always weaves in and out the #1 spot for all of music history and will keep doing so, rap is still outperforming it tho
It’s not like it’s less people listening to hip hop just less people listening to only hip hop
at least we agree that show hooey
I mean, we kinda agree on more than that. I have GKMC in the same tier as Yeezus and you think Yeezus is better and that ain't a big discrepancy
I just don't think Yeezus is better than TPAB though
i agree with you but the whole thread is a discussion about mainstream rap fans which is why im playing devils advocate. i could easily say i dont care i got rxpapi and xaviersobased but im not a mainstream rap fan.
Ok so don't play devils advocate?
there's no need to feed into OP's argument, why not show him the light instead. there's no hiphop cannon where we all like the same artists (anymore), and that's OKAY.
Then why is he his favorite artist?
Why would you say “this is my favorite artist” but not be musically inspired by them at all?
What about people that don’t make music? Are they not allowed to have a favorite artist because they don’t create music themselves?
You don’t have to be musically influenced by an artist to qualify them being your favorite artist

tpab the first vinyl i ever purchased tbf
It’s always some dude who’s sole musical influence comes from Future, Carti and Thug saying “oh yeah Chuck Berry my goat”
I feel what you’re saying but it isn’t always that simple. Sometimes you’re inspired by an artist and it affects the lifestyle and the vibe which is obviously gonna bleed into the music.

im not trying to feed into his argument because i talked about it from a sociopolitical perspective not "kanye and kendrick made albums too good for us mere mortals".
To the extent Kendrick and Kanye killed the genre, it would primarily be due to the fact they brought a bunch of indie rock hipsters and pop heads into hip hop and now we have to listen to you all b**** and moan constantly, acting like experts despite secretly having the utmost disdain for the genre and culture

I understand what your saying
Like Uzi saying Marilyn Manson was a huge influence because of all the edgelord satanic s***
But it’s just corny imo. Just say you like their aesthetic, Don’t call them your favorite artist oat and a huge influence
“Yeah he was a huge influence because I also painted my nails black” 💀

Yea but he would be a totally different artist without that influence

Well I would assume anyone who makes music appreciates some aspect of it more than someone who doesn’t
I’ve never met a single huge music fan who didn’t at least dabble in making music
Tbf ion take any non creative take seriously fr u gotta do something for me to care about ya opinion

Talking to someone who knows nothing about your creative field is annoying and talking to someone involved in no creative field is mind numbing

No because that wouldn’t be accurate it would be accurate to say it’s their fav artist or they are heavily inspired by them lol just because that’s not obvious to you doesn’t mean it’s not true it’s about their process u like very obviously don’t make music or don’t really channel inspirations in any interesting way lol
