I watched David Mamet's last feature Henry Johnson starring Shia Labeouf. Not sure they did the part where you expand it into a movie lol

But was the play amazing to begin with?

His films just often reek of very flat characterization. Like Tariq is just a super on the nose writer and the way he just lays it on super thick with Rizs characters physical deterioration and saying his condition is hereditary and that his body is attacking itself in this super contrived way to parallel his creative lack of vision and his tensions with his father is honestly a big part of why Tariq is a hack. He writes stories in a very one dimensional way that doesn’t see his characters in a real authentic way but rather as a very pointed way of conveying his messages. The same is true with Ghosts of Sugar Land and the same appears to be the case here. Tariq’s ways of documenting his characters perils are solely to victimize them in very heavy handed ways which is then used to pointedly relate to some heavy handed one dimensional life lessons or situations.

This is sadly just the case with many smaller filmmakers nowadays and is a big part of why most of what is being made from young filmmakers is garbage. Were in a generation where filmmakers are learning more about project management rather than visual language or actually watching the masters and it shows
