I don’t mean pop as in numbers. I mean the style of the music was much more pop sensible, hip hop influenced pop music, both of them singing and making catchy melodic choruses puts them into a less hip hop oriented sphere imo

hotline bling, the monster, hold on we’re going home, not afraid, love the way you lie, etc., these are just straight up pop songs

Then why could Jay in that same era sell truckloads of albums without being quite as watered down and insipid as say, "Ass Like That", or "Ratchet Happy Birthday". Of course Jay has a strong library of mindless songs and the R. Kelly albums are horrendous on multiple fronts but his solo catalog blows these guys out of the water and put up similar numbers. Bro went 5x Plat twice and has never not had a Platinum album. Has 2 diamond singles too, but never made a mockery of rap the way Em and Drake have to artificially pad their commercial dominance.

But that's what I'm also saying. These pop attempts weren't organic hip hop that blew up. They were either amazing crossover songs (Hold On), were okay (The Monster), or most of the time they were just ass "Toosie Slide and Not Afraid)

Em in fairness did his thing in 2000 with making highly lyrical rap like "Stan" become a monster on the charts. Can't deny it and wouldn't, hip hop benefitted tremendously from that. Hip hop also benefited from Take Care's innovative approach to blending r&b and rap, which has a storied past that oldheads want to deny because admitting they liked those Mariah Carey songs with Wu-Tang Clan members on them makes them feel weird.
