class wariowhile I agree that saying 'it's the contract' is a bit of a cop out, it's also a cop out to ignore that all of his shoes were designed by a huge team of ppl who fleshed out what was at best a rough sketch from ye. how is him disproportionately profiting from their work any better than adidas doing it? not to mention the entire adidas deal allowing him to use their entire production and distribution infrastructure at zero cost to himself while raking in a huge royalty at the same time. Oh and multiple shoes used adidas proprietary designs and tech too.
end of the day, the main issue with this stuff be the way in which capitalism operates and has operated for hundreds of years. but nobody, not least ye who just wants idpol blackitalism actually cares about this.
A lot of good points were made here. I don’t know the creative process well enough or how much other designers get paid to truly dispute or agree with those aspects. I’d like to think Ye did pretty heavy leg work for the creative and promotional identities of Yeezy but really I have no idea. I agree about capitalism’s strengths & weaknesses pretty much being the big player in all this.
I said in another post that Ye seems willing to make an example out of himself to reveal the flaws of the big picture here ? Maybe inadvertently but nonetheless his experiences are eye opening on how to and how not to maneuver the business world
