Is this worth getting? Seeing so many mixed things, what’s the verdict?

Just killed this Antumbra boss at one of those Sanctions.

SUCH S***. But you really start to get the rhythm. I was probably way underleveled. I hardly have upgraded my health so i was getting one shot

I would say one of the better bosses even though it was annoying.

bought this game two days ago, and was absolutely geeked to start it, however my hype was extinguished as soon as I took my first steps in the game. I have so many problems with this s*** lmao

first the controls are really terrible, whoever had the idea of making square (on PS5) the button for both jumping, and taking objects is a f***in dumbass. also having to hold the button to indeed take s*** is so annoying. the movements are also shaky as f***.

then the inventory, I mean what is this bullshit? then the missions where you literally have to kill hundreds of mfs to liberate a site such as the Karin Quarry???? what? then having to find the nexus portals to be able to teleport to the locations, when the map is already so big that you can't bother scouting every nook and cranny?

and finally, my biggest problem maybe, is the story, or lack of, to be fair. how hard is it to write something at least a little bit interesting? you get your throat cut and your intestines ripped out and you magically survive without any explanation, mfs be taking you to some other dimension which you have no information on, you got whimsical fairy kids giving you powers for no reason, you upgrade by using cosmic rubikscubes you find in the wild or who land in your inventory when you do certain s***? bruh.

Now that a few of you are playing this, what's the word on the detail compared to something like rdr 2?
I've read that obviously the story for this sucks (from just about everyone and everything) but as far as the world goes it actually looks like .it is giving rdr 2 and other upper echelon titles a run for its money. Obviously rdr 2 is running on previous generation hardware but that's how good it was

Red Dead 2 was a full on simulator, for better or for worse.

One of the games that I stubbornly pushed through because of just how damn beautiful the game is. I still don't think any game has topped it personally. Especially on PC.

Regarding gameplay though, it's a game I have many qualms with. People talk about it having an intentional feel, but there's just straight up missed inputs and so many contexutal controls depending on how you're facing. It can mess with the controls.

The gunplay is okay at best. The readbility of enemies can get kinda hard depending on the environment so you're almost always using the Dead Eye.

The weapon system was trash. Being tied to the horse is one thing, It constantly forgetting or resetting your loadout was some horseshi'. Then you gotta go back to your damn horse. Red Dead 1 weapon wheel is just better from a QOL pov, but they were going full immersion here.

People want to say this game has bad controls? I'd say Crimson clears it personally. Once you get used to the feel it's really not bad. Plus the updates have helped with the running. It's just a lot more fantastical so we have crazy flying and mounts maving traversal more fun here.

Combat it more fun here as well.

Red Dead 2 has a beautiful story and a very rich world of characters, but I wouldn't say the mission structure is very different in either game.

You meet some people, end up having to fight some s***, bada boom bada bing.

Not finishing this abyss last mission I put 107 hours into this on PC, and I have to give the game credit where it deserves it, the optimization and visuals are excellent. The game looks great, runs well, and at its best, it really does feel like a massive open-world adventure with a lot to do.

For most of the midgame, I was honestly closer to giving it an 8/10. The most fun I had was exploring, grinding materials, upgrading weapons, building up the camp, and messing with all the side systems. That part of the game had me hooked. There is something satisfying about gathering materials, improving your gear, unlocking camp features, and slowly making your build stronger.

But the game drags near the end.

The story is barely there. Characters show up with little to no buildup, and the game never really made me care about them. It also gives you other playable characters, but I barely touched them because the game never made it feel necessary or meaningful. They just felt underused.

The biggest reason I dropped my score from an 8 to a 7 is the endgame. Around Chapter 7 or 8, I assumed there was still a lot of game left and that maybe the story would start building toward something stronger. Instead, the late game became a bunch of frustrating puzzle sections with little guidance. The game has you watching memories and solving puzzles but it often gives no real hints on what you’re supposed to do. It stopped feeling like an adventure and started feeling like youtube busywork.

The bosses near the end were also disappointing. A lot of them felt like they were added just to look cool, not because the story built them up well. The fights were uninspired, and because there was no strong narrative reason to care, they didn’t hit the way they should have.

By the end, it honestly made a lot of my grinding feel pointless. I spent hours upgrading equipment, farming materials, and building my camp, but the final stretch didn’t really reward that investment in a satisfying way. It leaned more into annoying puzzles than the systems that made the game fun in the first place.

Overall, Crimson Desert is a beautiful, well optimized, ambitious openworld game but the weak story, poorly explained puzzles, underdeveloped characters, and disappointing endgame drag it down hard.

    Final score: 7/10.

  • That final boss fight was one of the worst fights ever
