I personally never expected FF7R to come to Xbox. The OG FF7 is probably one of the games that made PS as big as it was, so I filully expected PS and Square to make it a full exclusive.

same but no silent hill 2 remake sucks man
hope it’s not true
It’s been confirmed in other situations that PlayStation specifically pays to keep games off of Xbox for a longer time period so i definitely believe it . It probably is only a limited exclusive and will go to PC but not Xbox

Wouldn't be a surprise JRPGs never sold well on Xbox historically, probably doesn't take too much more incentive for Sony to keep it exclusive if they just paid that portion off

It’s kind of a self fulling prophecy though . Xbox games don’t have a chance to sell better when those type of games keep ducking the platform . Dragon quest and persona 5 did relatively well so it shows with more support good money could be made however

We don't know what they would've done traditionally tho since they just hit game pass. We only have previous sales numbers pre-game pass to account for.
Even trying to find sales numbers for JRPGs recently released doesn't even seem like it's reported on with Xbox. UK Charts showed Xbox account for only 6% of Crisis Core sales.

Yea but that’s unreliable since majority of Xbox gamers buy games digital . Those charts only account for physical release
So yeah we don’t fully know the numbers but we at least know there is interest considering how they did on the game pass charts. Especially persona and at one point it was pretty high on the sales charts (on Xbox store)

They're good games but they're free which throws a wrench in estimating what it would've been. Plus we're now in an age of the game pass only gamer. People that aren't going to pay for a game and they just expect to come to game pass at some point or they just won't play it. Which I feel has lessened the amount of consumers that would purchase games on the platform.

In theory this should be the case but you still have a large amount gamers that end up buying the games on game pass regardless . High on life is a recent example of this . It made it to top 3 in sales over high selling games when it’s on game pass anyways . Other developers saw a boost in sales after it was on game pass for already released games as well . So developers seem to more often than not get a sales boost and they always get a fat sum of money to even get the games on the service . It’s a win win situation it seems
Yeah we unfortunately could never get a “if it was never on game pass” stat but it doesn’t seem to be harming games or developers. It ends up bringing more awareness of the game that Xbox owners may have never played or bought to begin with. DQ and persona also being examples of this

We never get to see the numbers to know how many copies are being bought of games that hit game pass to confirm that though. High on life performed well on Steam for sure, though I'm sure plenty of PC gamers don't own Xbox's, word of my mouth and the ricky/morty stimulus I'm sure helped. Was definitely the most popular drop on game pass this year.
Seems like the benefit of Microsoft just handing them a check just outweighs the risk of if people will actually support their titles. I do wonder how Microsoft and Sony engage in these conversations with developers or publishers. Is it just covering projections or are they paying a heftier price to get timed exclusives or to drop on game pass for free

Yeah we don’t get hard numbers but the Xbox charts are always available in the store and can be telling of the trajectory at least. Guardians of the galaxy for example went up after the game pass launch and with high on life i was referring to only the Xbox store . It was more bought than 2k and fifa at one point which is massive for a game pass launch title.
And i assume it’s usually a hefty price for the bigger titles especially if it’s a timed exclusive. Or in some cases a project may be more of a risk so they play it safe on the service and may not require as much money

Yea for a 3rd party it's pretty crazy success.
One thing about Square Enix I noticed though is none of their games coming out next year are hitting Xbox at all. Business wise you'd think they have reason for that. Final Fantasies are PS5 exclusive, Forspoken hitting PC and PS5, they got a music game dropping on Playstation and Switch, and Octopath 2 hitting everything besides Xbox
2 of those aren't timed exclusives and Octopath 1 was or is on game pass, yet they choose not to release it 2 on Xbox?

This is why I’m actually grateful for this acquisition happening right now . It’s a chance we get some behind the scenes insight on information that shouldn’t be public for us. Hopefully we learn more of the details surrounding these deals and the motivation. Square Enix has always been confusing to me with how they decide what is available to Xbox and what isn’t.
tryin to sell my ps4 first
Sheesh how much can you get off of that at this point ? Is it a pro?

they never give xbox a chance
hopefully persona coming opens up more opportunities for more to come
