    yes ive heard this!!

it would be really cool if they did this. I remember people being paranoid about it like 15 years ago but it was foolishness.

tangentially related, people have done science expierments that they legit thought could have way worst consequences and just let it rip lol

they werent sure when they detonated the first nuke that it would ignite the atmosphere and destroy the earth. (which is impossible, but at the time they didnt know for sure)

cern infinitely safer than the drive the scientists take to the facility lol

feynman/einstein's moral dilenma working on the nukes while still progressing science has to be one of the more interesting ideas in science too.
on one hand youre moving humanitys knowledge forward, on the other, evil humans about to use this to hill hundreds of thousands

I know. people think everything seems bleak now, but i cant imagine living through that era. we are so lucky everything has worked out so far.

could you imagine what was going through their heads before they fell asleep at night?

and if they didnt progress it, somebody else would and it mightve been in worse hands. and it also is the key to environmentally friendly energy, essential to moving us to a type 1 civilization.

if you havent' read when we cease to understand the world, check it out. it's a crazy historical fiction book around the development of quantum physics and mathematics along with the science of developing cyanide and nerve gas in WW1

it specifically tries to get into the head of some those scientists

luckily they didnt have a social media feed to see everyone hating on them on top of what they were going through internally.

ik most scientists probably dont pay attention to that in current day. But i know there must be some number of scientific advancements that weren't made due to potential kickback

this is awesome, i screen shotted thank you. i love a good book.

In univeristy i read a book called cat’s cradle by Kurt Vonnegut that was about a weapon, thats a new type of ice that destroyed everything it touches and if it got in the wrong spot it would freeze the earth.

it was a satire about the nuclear arms race. a different vibe but a easy and fantastic read.

I wrote an essay comparing it to george carlin’s satire.

one of the most memorable things i did in my degree!

will check out the book, this really up my alley

    oh for sure.

even when they went to the moon in the 60s there was a lot of public pushback. which is hard to imagine now, from the outside looking in, its the crowning achievement of the usa.

I wish more people could go against the grain. but social media makes the pushback so much louder, even if its only a minority of society that uses it, in a scream into the void kinda way.

    I dislike elons political takes,
but people forget how far forward he's pushing science with his numerous projects.
Thankfully his flavor of tism allows him to ignore any backlash n continue on with his projects

i agree, people dont realize how impressive it is they got the rocket to take off and land by itself.

the beaurocracy and low risk tolerance of government wouldnt of allowed that to happen

hes a flawed person to put it lightly, but that doesnt detract from the scientific advancements people in his company made. things are complex and they simply coexist.

and I agree his flavour of tism is something a lot of engineers could learn from.

Without a doubt. You could particularly pluck out the last 10 years beginning in 2016- now and probably until at least 2030 as a period where we just regressed as a people. Choosing ignorance, pride and tribalism over anything else.

People will look back at us and wonder what the f*** we were on

The people of the future will likely have sympathy for the general public of now as we are working against generations of propaganda, the workings of big business and spiritual + techno death cults with trillions of invested dollars
