I can't watch this and think to myself wow Kanye made this album at gunpoint and didn't really believe in it

8:23 "I think my greatest art comes from a perspective of excitement and joy. It's a completely different perspective, about being extremely excited about stuff that is only cool to me!" -Kanye, talking about MBDTF

flaws in art are part of the humanity of it

I think this idea gets attributed incorrectly sometimes. I feel like that applies to the performance aspect, ie. the delivery of the vocalist or how the instrumentation sounds, etc.

The “flaws” in an album like MBDTF are 100% there; the extended outro in Runaway perfectly encapsulates that. MBDTF isn’t a clean record in any way imaginable. It’s rough, it’s raw, it’s mixed terribly, but the songs are brilliantly composed and crafted so it works.

The album is bursting at the seams with humanity and it doesn’t really give off a feeling of sterility at all

the Runaway outro is a literal album highlight, not sure you understand the concept of a “flaw”

also, please don’t confuse “mix” and “master”

there’s nothing wrong with the mix on the album

It's one of the greatest albums ever conceived, but I can see if it doesn't hit as hard for certain people

It'll always be my go to Ye album along with "Grad" & "LR"

The fact people care to discuss Kanye on KTT might mean music is coming soon?

And I think you’re misconstruing the idea of a “flaw” in this context too. An album like Thriller is literal perfect pop music and nobody docks it points because it’s not “flawed”, it’s just great music. Same with MBDTF. Yes the Runaway outro is an album highlight but it’s an example of the album’s humanity showing, it’s not just an hour of pristine perfect sounding music.

And the mix on MBDTF is not good whatsoever but it doesn’t matter

The sound was pure hip-hop for the most part, but this high-brow artsy aesthetic from the artwork paintings to the performance art and choreography from George Condo and Vanessa Beecroft was def inspired by and presented from a Eurocentric lens. Kanye’s proximity to whiteness post-808s has always been part of his appeal to a certain demographic that always separated him from other traditional hip-hop acts.

I feel like that's such a lazy criticism

Literally he's a black american rapper. The whole point is that he's standing in the middle of black and white america. Which is something that a lot of black artists talk about at some point or another

And he just made the point by juxtaposing progressive rock with hip-hop drums into a style that was completely new in rap at the time

  • I was feeling this way for a minute and ranking 808s YEEZUS and Graduation over it

Just recently got back to really rocking with it lately though and ranking it number 1 again

Honestly prime Ye output is just about your mood
