we outside
Aubrey Drake Graham.
Some people don’t f*** to music though.
Like me for example.
Sometimes I wanna hear the crickets.
Giving a random nigga that information is sick
scaring the hoes music can lowkey mean anything beyond surface level it’s fake a misogynist statement that assumes women aren’t as engaged with music as men
while that’s obviously not true, i think it’s easy joke to parade around because men are chronically online. so you get a bunch of men who have pretty “mainstream” taste for online circles (franktyler ye) but have a superiority complex that makes them insufferable to anyone within 15 feet.
People are dumb and still think rock, dance, house music is inherently white even tho it is the complete opposite
Also insecurity and believe striving for diversity instead of sticking to emotional piano beats is trying too hard
I mean yea I guess I see what what you mean, but tbh I feel like a lot of us in black community don’t give certain music a fair chance because of the “white boy” stigma that comes with it
And it’s just wild how a white dude can blast trap music loud af and no one really gives it much attention, but a black dude listening to alternative or something is def going to cause him to get stuck with labels
It just really sucks that black people are the only ones that gotta deal with something like that
they think black ppl are a monolith and arent able to listen to non mainstream rap music
I find it funny that this is a music forum and there are so many ppl here that don’t like when their rap music is too musical
they think black ppl are a monolith and arent able to listen to non mainstream rap music
Or it's an actual stereotype that's a joke and you guys are making it into something else

It’s both tbh. Some people will be joking but then you have people unironically try to say something is bad because of what they perceive the fanbase is
Giving a random nigga that information is sick
Thanks man, I think you’re pretty cool too.
black people have always made “experimental” music, out existance demands that we are constantly reinventing ourselves and everything around us
i think that kinda music gets called yt ppl music for so many reasons that i can’t even get into it rn or else i’ll give myself a headache, but basically i think it’s bc
if we’re talking modern right, i think yt artists have to “do more” to craft a sense of individuality, hence some ppl see some music as weird for the sake of being weird / different.
if to be black in america still technically is a deviation of the “cultural standard”, then it’s much easier for critics to homogenize / lump black artists together, while still highlighting their individuality. idk if i’m making sense or wording this the right way.
i think it has a lot to do with the racialization of genre tho more than anything
with that being said, i think when black artists make “weird” music, often they’re seen as an academic, lot of white friend types. sadly the barriers to music has increased over past few decades. before the black middle class, thrived with musicians. now we’re seeing kids still have their creative impulses. it’s just all channeled into best making.
from a purely economical standpoint, it makes the most sense. and if you get good, why not tame your impulses to become a famous producer with large placements?
so yea with all that being said i just think black music has and always will be the most experimental (the best experimental artists jn the west rn are black, klein, keiyaa, dean, slauson malone, etc) it’s just easy to say yt ppl like other kind of music when american culture ingrained into us that we are hyper sexual beings who don’t find pleasure in sophisticated things such as the arts, but only thru sex, acting out, etc. it’s all age old stereotypes, that people play into, black and white.
I've seen people say MF Doom is "white people" music too which is funny because he'll often thrown in Five Percenter slang in many of his raps lol.
He is probably is "scaring the hoes" music though ngl.
Only feel this way cause it be a lotta mfs who love MF Doom but call rap music that isn’t rappity or super layered in terms of production and arrangement; “basic”
And a lot of em r not black
It’s both tbh. Some people will be joking but then you have people unironically try to say something is bad because of what they perceive the fanbase is
It happens to everyone though I truly don't get the outrage. Drake fans get clowned for listening to Billboard Hot 100 and caring about sales. White redditors on r/HipHopHeads listen to Death Grips and MF DOOM

it’s def done on purpose by the market industry to some degree to uphold the racialization of genre
simply put, it’s much easier to market when genre is based around race. makes all the number ppl in the labels happy

only closed minded people who are mad their favorite artists don’t get the same attention do this

nobody clowns Drake fans for listening to Billboard Hot 100. Y’all were over here making fun of Bad Bunny for the lower sales he had this time around and yall also hate Taylor (rightfully so lmao) so what does that even mean

I'm not in that "yall" man
But I get it cause I make these posts too sometimes
And I like some of the Taylor songs
My point is that every music community gets clowned, unless you guys truthfully think there's some racial stuff going on it's pretty normal otherwise
Every artist you named is scaring the hoes music (with Kendrick it depends on which song you play). And that's fine. Just fine a specific kind of hoe that likes to listen to that s***.

Glad you as a Drake fan acknowledged that every artist gets clowned on here.

I just don't get the point they are trying to make, I've never seen someone be like "black people don't listen to this, they are a monolith" but that's what they're inferring or thinking that's what's being implied
It seems farfetched compared to it just being a stereotypical white thing

The thing with this conversation is that there's multiple layers to it. I see these issues as a couple things going on. One is the white hip hop heads. Enough said. The other is "alternative" black people who feel alienated for their tastes because they deviate from the (perceived) cultural norm or stereotypes. This happens both inside and outside the culture. When it's from inside the culture its alienating and when its from outside the culture there's heavy racial undertones from non blacks and especially from critics who see them as "one of the good ones".
These layers often conicide with another and lead to instances like JPEG mafia where he gets written off as both someone for the alternative "weirdos" (inside the culture) AND swept up and adored by the white hip hop heads (outside the culture).

because there’s racial undertones to dismissing a certain brand of music as “for white people” versus anything with making fun of a Billboard stan
