old town road debunks this whole thread.
No one think OTR is best song oat.
Guarantee someone does
The only ppl use hits as a measure of quality can't defend their favorite artist without it..
The notion of “popular = better” is far more pervasive in music than other art forms, and for interesting reason
Songs are examples of the human condition that are largely enjoyed socially first and foremost, unlike films or paintings, which are enjoyed based on individual engagement with concepts above all else. If someone in real life with the highest social value is someone who is the most popular, then how do you think the highest value of a social art form will be gauged?
On how popular it is
like bro life is good listen to some hits some good music find you a pretty woman no need for all that weirdo mysterious s***
Talk to em

he's a funny poster bro
op said he's better looking than everyone on this site
Theres an argument to be made that sales in general can reflect better music given the fact that it can indicate how the music reaches a wider variety of audiences. Thriller is an example of this. It isn't always the case tho but people immediately discrediting sales but big up critics who just have an opinion and can be bias or misinformed arent helping music discussions. Regardless, most of these discussions are pointless. Opinions are opinions
Need more debate please, some deeper reasoning instead of surface level debate, lets go deeper
i like the spirit of this thread, but i feel like you're being a little obtuse with this. I agree that i wish different smaller, and (to some) more interesting artists would get more attention, but there is also some undeniable merit to AAA pop music. I like to think of pop music as a grand sampler platter where all the pop culture at a given time wells and is served to a mass public. This is amazing to me because it introduces more thornier or direct parts of music to a much larger audience. For instance lil durk being on a drake song may introduce a casual listener to chicago drill, and that might introduce them to king louie and that might introduce them to chief keef and then all the sudden they might see a whole connected circle appear and that'll leave the listener with not only a deeper understanding of the history of rap music as a whole but also a greater appreciation for the song that initially set them on this journey to begin with!!! Even from a personal standpoint I wouldve never heard of gil-scott heron if kanye didn't sample him on mbdtf in 2010 and thats what started my art journey when i was 15(also idk if this means anything to you but i got my bfa from calarts since i saw you were talking about your arts education before).

OP is the epitome of an elitist.
That word gets thrown around on the internet too much but I think OP definitely fits that bill.
That would just exclude you for even being able to contribute to the vote
are you seriously saying you wouldn't make your own opinion and just accept the list instead
I promise it wouldn't turn out how you want
Considering I am extreme left wing, no

Y’all the worst w this bs
“Why isn’t music sxn about music”
Op made an interesting thread and has sat here for 20 pages discussing and defending their take
And y’all just dismissing it as trolling because you disagree w that take and can’t be added justifying it
thats because no one actually thinks like this
No one studies the charts and says “hey this song is #3, this is now my favorite song”
They listen to a song and they either like it or dont like it
but they also don't listen to songs they don't hear..
if the radio places 8 mid songs..you listen to what you like but you are also not listening to anyhing great.
why would "bad" music become extremely popular and loved by the majority?
people who think hit records are somehow bad or unimpressive are a lot more ed than the reverse

This comparison makes no sense. Most popular in which society? If it's like the most popular person in school, not everybody would like that person, and people will have different opinions.
Choosing to like this person only based on the fact that they're popular is sheep mentality. You didn't even judge for yourself.

Why is McDonalds popular?
Capitalism
You’re viewing this through the context of this site which is a music discussion site
Of course people here know about pitchfork
But almost everyone on earth listens to music and this discussion is about the whole population not the 0.1% of people who care about music so much they spend hours on a site about it
Most regular people don’t know what pitchfork is or care what it says
p4k is one of if not the biggest music site in the world. it gets referenced in pop culture and twitter all the time. if y’all think p4k is this underground site then oh man
soulja boys got smackers cmon lk you’ve never lstened to one of hs tapes

Tell me how Maroon 5 is popular then
I enjoy discussing high art with other fine high art connoisseurs. It’s a shame that so many low level casuals and normies had to infiltrate and infect the thread with their disgusting casual opinions. Go listen to Nickelback and Ed Sheeran.
