theres so much bullshit that goes on with rap/rnb and it alllll stems back from racisim im deadass brah and usually the niggas that can actually do that have a more white leaning fan base like carti and frank and dot all are critically acclaimed rappers that are given the "artist" smarter than thou label from critics so its exceptional for them 2 do it

the era were in also is a factor, but rap is just seemed as a easier to make genre in the eyes of the industry its basically like comedy at da oscars

Because it’s a genre that historically has a crazy high turnover rate that values youth, its replacement of pop as the biggest commercial genre has created a huge tick in the ways of thinking in pop music fanbases, it’s highly saturated nature creates a next level of competition as part of the pride of the genre to many people esp because it as a genre is uniquely rooted in youth culture and putting dominance, competition, masculinity etc as a pedestal

On top of that the racial and cultural divide component makes them some of the most worshipped yet dehumanised group of artists makes these stars get treated often with far less respect, trust, and dignity

    Niggas signing 5 album contracts
    Undedicated fans
"All that hype aint the same next year"
Most rappers cant tour on old music

Most rappers dont have Kendrick/Drake/Kanye retention so if they dont drop for a while its basically over (see: Asap rocky)

i think the funniest s*** about this type of stuff though is we get artists inbetween majort drops that we use to pass the time

some of them become the big artist

travis was who we used to wait on for ye
choker brock hampton all that s*** was the frank ocean drought
carti created an entire underground scene because he wasnt around like that nigga che really is just 2020 carti yeat was just white carti

the wait be so important but because of social media the pressure from fans and industry its hard not to. also music isn't nearly as profitable as it used to be, you better be a good performer and have great merch if u wanna take breaks in this environment

Does anyone else think it’s the fan who are decreasing the value of the music? They listen to one project that took a year and are instantly like okay when’s the next one coming?

That's facts it's something I've even seen as a white artist in hip-hop

I remember playing my first shows and they were "rap" lineups and there would be 8 artists on the lineup, the DJ wouldnt even know your name etc

when I played my first show as an "indie/R&B" artist I had respect and a green room I wasn't any bigger than I was before they just put me on a "different" lineup

Most rap albums are simple, skeletal, piecemeal. You rent a studio for some sessions and put vox over instrumentals. The release windows, turnaround times, and shelf life reflect that. This s*** ain't Radiohead or sumn.

Well…the creative process doesn’t work like that…BUT who can you say that too? Everyone’s so pushy and demanding of artists lol

Do people pressure singer songwriters to drop?

My fav Lykke Li hasn't made new music since 2022 (2024 was a reimagination of 2022 in that see reverses it) and I don't really care she can take her time

Yea same booking company and everything. Some venues will just straight up not do hip-hop shows as well

this was gonna be a point I make in the "I'm not a rapper, I'm an artist" video but it's like, as annoying as it is when artists do that, imagine the doors behind the scenes people are closing on them because they're rappers

labels investing less money into hip-hop, Eric Adams stopping artists from playing at Rolling Loud in their own cities even when they don't have criminal records just bc they make drill

Yep most of the time the ones providing the pressure have their own ulterior motive.

I think due to the demand.

It’s arguably the most popular genre in all of music.

    Could be wrong though

because rappers typically grow their fanbase when they start out by flooding the (e-)streets with new music, then as soon as they get popular enough, they stop

for example, let’s look at Young Thug’s annual output:

2013: 1017 Thug, Lobby Runners (1 mixtape, 1 group project)
2014: Tha Tour Part 1, Black Portland, YTMLF, PURPLE, 1017 Thug 2&3 (2 collabs, 4 compilations)
    2015: Barter 6, SS1, SS2 (3 large mixtapes)
    2016: I’m Up, SS3, Jeffery (3 shorter mixtapes)
2017: BTG, Young Martha, Super Slimey (1 mixtape, 1 EP, 1 collab)
2018: Hear No Evil, SL1, OTR (1 mixtape, 2 EPs)
    2019: SMF (1 album)
    2020: Slime & B (1 collab)
    2021: SL2, Punk (1 group project, 1 album)
    2022: nothing
2023: Business is Business (1 album)
    2024: nothing
    2025: UY Scuti (1 album)

Thug’s popularity started growing from 2013-2014, which is when he also ramped up his releases. and this isn’t even including loose tracks & features.

he released the most music in 2015, then steadily started dropping less music per year until he was down to 1 full solo release per year by 2018, and he began dropping once every 2 years after 2021 (of course, the RICO impacted that as well, but he was already on track for that pace beforehand)

i haven’t studied any other artist’s releases like Thug’s, but i think at least Uzi’s release patterns show similar behavior.
