What exactly is there to be positive about in late stage capitalism? The question should be where are all the radical/political rappers?
The spaces today that birthed A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul has been gentrified and like folks said, it’s corny and thrown into some hotep/woke category.
I think Dead Prez was ahead of their time a group like that with a bit more modern sonics would make so much sense right now.
Also when the label caught on to what Dead Prez was tryna do, they stepped on their 2nd release for a minute
Where’s the rapper born 1997- with the cool factor, looks and banger appeal strictly on the level of a Carti or YoungBoy but with socially conscious bangers and radical punchlines? That’s what’s needed, that’s the functional “positivity”
They gotta be cool like that or it won’t work
RIP XXXTENTACION
positive rappers get called corny and dismissed
Yeah, but don't stop there, let's unpack that...
Is the modern listener truly so far gone to be conditioned against genuine positivity in rap music?
Or is the rap nigga making "positive music" just not good at it so it's easy to dismiss them? Would they even be considered good at making "normal" hedonistic rap music?
lol Did Obama lowkey dead positive rap?
Devolution in education and writing/reading imo. Books are “read” to you, essays are written for you, youth these days cares less about history than any generation before as well imo.
I saw a poplar tweet yesterday saying “I can’t believe MJ made this at 24” about Thriller. That just hits home at how much dumber we expect young people to be nowadays lol
Back in the day—Ice Cube writing F*** The Police at 18, Pac writing Brenda’s Got A Baby at 21, Nas making Illmatic at 18, Kate Bush was 18 when she wrote Wuthering Heights, Tribe members were 18/19 when they debuted etc etc etc…
It was normal back then. Now people act like if you 18-21 you are a stupid little child who can’t do s*** for yourself, it’s hilarious

well first off @op is looking at the positive rappers he posted with rose tinted glasses

De La Soul was literally called hippies by critics and Arsenio Hall alike and they detested that s*** so much that their next album (De La Soul is Dead) included a song detailing a fight they had along with the Violators.
Prince Paul has tons of stories about how gully them niggas really was.
People forget them/Native Tongue Posse in general were still niggas.
Tribe Called Quest also had to change/harden up their image by the time Beats, Rhymes, and Life dropped.
But the thing about "positivity" in rap has always been looked at as corny. It doesn't seem authentic to the eyes of the marginalized because it is looked at as insulting to the times that they (the marginalized) are living in.
Cause @op never brought up PM Dawn. Or Arrested Development. Or Freestyle Fellowship.
Nah, not them sleepy, Amazon Warehouse-workin, Honda Civic-driving rappers (J. Cole, Dreamville)
first thing first is yall gotta define what is a "positive rapper?"

cause this is one of the darkest songs ever recorded on wax lol. And this is literally their second album.

ATCQ especially. Beats, Rhymes felt like a reaction to what was going on in late 90s raps compared to the early 90s
