They worked for that #1 yeah but it also fell off super quick. Definitely a hit tho not backed by labels either iirc Kanye was independent by V1?

Yeah he was! It was i think the biggest indépendant song of all time or something like that.
Im sure if it had radio play and a media push where he wasnt black balled it wouldnt of fallen off as quick as it did!

Laugh Now Cry Later if we’re going off the Hotline Bling/God’s Plan/In My Feelings scale

Laugh Now Cry Later is nowhere near any of those songs, why are y’all so delusional about that song on here man

Yeah he did! I kinda get why he’s holding off on the album, he’s just building and building hype. Why let it stop when he can buy more time to craft something and keep the hype building with the features and singles

    2024 (the single) was huge
Idk how he got away with starting a rollout with mega singles that you couldn’t even stream and then just not dropping anything

Would you argue against the idea that his grip/ influence in the way you’re describing here ended with/ after More Life?

Put Dancehall/ Afro beats on for wider (and whiter) audiences, kinda started the playlist 20+ song throw every sort of song on the album and let people take what they like thing that a lot of hip hop does now, had everyone glued to Apple Music radio (really fun era honestly) etc.

Scorp was a bigger album ofc but I don’t think it was culturally influential in the way Drake was before it. Had his biggest hits ofc tho which is why I made the thread questioning if he’s had anything similarly big since

I don't think Drake has stopped being influential because the music industry, like most other industries, is based on seeing what the major acts do and then copying them.

Even on Scorpion, Drake was still inspiring other artists. Bounce was a very massive sound in New Orleans and has always been but Drake was the first artist to bring it to the forefront of mainstream music like he did and he did it with not one but TWO major number one smash hits. After those songs, it was mad artists like Chris Brown trying their hand at bounce music (to no success). But that's just another example of how he continues to inspire.

People will ALWAYS try to mimic and copy what they see someone else try and be successful at. That's just how the world works.

And while I don't think Drake is the driving creative force in rap anymore, it doesn't mean people still don't look to him and what he does. As for Drake, I think he spends more time trying his hand at already established sounds now and is less concerned with spear-heading new s*** but that's okay because he's spent more time than anyone else being the creative leader of the genre. It would be ridiculous to expect him to continue being that for the rest of his career and he's still making great music regardless.

Wayne and Kanye popularize the sound that T-Pain started that Future and Thug ran with and are considered the most influential of their generation and you can hear it all over today but nah Drake the most influential to melodic rap. Man ight bruh lmfao

How did you go outside when lockdown was March 2020 and people weren’t let back outside unless it was for essential jobs? I didn’t see anyone until June when I was let back to work so unless you went to a speakeasy…which doesn’t speak for outside

Yeah. I'm more so referring to the summer and onward.

You're being mad disingenuous and you know it. None of them niggas you mentioned were ever as massive or as impactful as Drake. They never had his visibility for as long as he's had it.

And if the case you're trying to make is that Drake, the rapper who made his way by being super melodic and the artist out of all these names you've mentioned with SEVERAL major classic projects that have endured the test of time and were as impactful as they were mostly because of HOW he used melody on them, then you're even worse off than I thought.

Bring up all the names you want, none of them did it the way Drake did and no, you cannot erase 15 years of history. Try that s*** somewhere else.

What is an example of cultural hits that dropped this year outside of the duck lipped lightskin crooner?

maybe Die Within a Smile by Bruno.

  • Nov 22, 2024

I think drake got at least one more mega hit in him, even if he’s gonna most likely collab to do it

That era from Views to more life ending with Scorp were all mega hits

He hasn’t had anything in a similar stratosphere since imo it’s weird

A theory could be that labels now have a harder time “creating” hits.
People listen to what they wanna listen too, music comes and goes faster.

Even though it's trash, it's Toosie Slide.

That was the last truly global anthemic hit Drake dropped but even it doesn't compare to his 2010's hits.

His hits afterward especially LNCL still did well on streaming but don't feel all that widespread compared to his 2010's hits.

Now, to be fair, this 100% has to do with the decentralization of the media and how many people are in their own music bubbles now.

Inescapable rap songs like NLU are now rare and truly a lightning in a bottle moment. We're just not in the decade of inescapable smash hits anymore outside of some pop acts.

Even Taylor Swift's latest album doesn't have a single smash hit that feels inescapable and she's supposed to be the biggest artist on the planet.

i think post covid people just phased out of "hits" that completely take over the world
