    sometimes. depending on case

there are artists that are legends where performing ability factors into it massively (MJ, Beyonce, Grateful Dead). and some where it doesn't even factor in (ex: Beatles)

many different ways to make an impact artistically so not fair to judge everyone the same way.

same way it kinda annoys me when people act like having a masterpiece album is a requirement which disregards artist coming before that era etc.

How many others are really in that Beatles category though? And obviously it wasn't really their fault that live performing was a lost cause for them with all the screaming. They were by most accounts pretty locked in after honing their chops by performing every night all night popping speed in Germany.

Yes, it's the energy transaction and it goes deeper than just playing the music for your fans
It's embodying it, give it meaning, giving it life
It's you showing them how u interprete the songs

Ofcourse not everyone can dance like Michael Jackson or James Brown

But see for example a Travis concert, yeah he so called just jumps around and screams, but he's actually really giving his energy and it's actually felt, he's engaging with the audience on a deep emotional and psychological level

I've seen drake live and this man was whack, he didn't command

It's what really sells you as an artist, the performance, the magic, creating an understanding between you and your fans, even tho not personal it feels as such

yeah you wouldn't really think trav is a better live but he def is, at least when I saw him a few time like a decade+ ago. saw this man drake twice before I gave up on him

hendrix not as a guitar player but as a singer, its a bit of a hot take tho but ive heard it a lot, its more accurate to say for singing live that list rather than performance. better examples are like jim morrison, beach boys, deftones, blink 182 all these guys r kinda notorious for their shows not living up to their albums. point is even if you accepted what they said it wouldnt MATTER.

Bro u are just saying whatever itt

tons of rock bands who are just ordinary live, not bad but they just play the music with nothing special whatsoever. and just have an alright reputation as a live band

lot of metal bands where it really doesnt matter much at all if they even played live

electronic artists with vastly different concept of what playing live means

guys who are more producer or composer type like Eno, no matter the genre

pop artists who are just meh performers nothing special

lot of rappers who arent anything special live too

think it really just depends on genre mostly. and majority of artists its just icing on the cake that only slightly factors imo

    Not always.

Lauryn Hill is a notoriously lazy performer but she's still a legend cause of Miseducation/Fugees.

right good points. I was just thinking rock/r&b acts back in the days when touring was the main way to build a following but I guess theres been pop stars that were mainly studio concoctions since at least the 50s.

surprised to hear that about metal bands. Eno did a fair amount of shows with Roxy at least. alot of rappers were coasting for alot of years.

dont get me wrong the metal scene itself is definitely important to a lot of bands which includes the performance aspect. but a lot of them are just basic performers and i dont think their live performances add much to the legacy

also there are some corners of metal that cater more towards studio recordings than live performances. like lo fi black metal or some hyper technical kinds of metal for example.

Playing gigs and open mics on a regular basis made me lose all respect for artists who aren't good live. Like...solid performers are dime a dozen here in LA. There's no excuse to be a bad performer when you have a legit platform. Practice your instrument, hone your craft.

By the way, the Beatles could actually play their s*** at a really high level.
