Some people just enjoy Drake more

Drake's pen is underrated, I don't have a problem seeing people rank Drake above Kendrick

TPAB is my favorite Kendrick album and a top 10 album of all time, any genre for me, but I could genuinely see why people would enjoy Take Care more than TPAB

GKMC is probably the most fully realized Kendrick Lamar album ever made though. I don't think Drake is touching that album frankly.

dont like either, but drakes singing/melodies alone puts him over kendrick

He's a middling singer with K Mart intercom melodies

  • Aug 24, 2023

Drake is just as lyrical as Kendrick but just not nearly as “technical” and I prefer witty/clever bars over leprechaun/alien type vocals rapping in 20 different octaves per bar.

Outside of that, Drake clears in every category.

    Wrong wrong wrong wrong

It’s true only nerds or people dat don’t understand hip hop/rap believe Kendrick is above or close to Drake,
j cole is overrated too 2 people who understand hip hop/rap

  • Kendrick is the only conscious rapper those people ever heard
    They don’t know any better

  • Aug 24, 2023

I put everyone in my hood on Kendrick in 2011

Have listened to him less and less since tht year

Idk nigga not bad but just don’t do it

  • Aug 24, 2023

The only thing Drake has over him is numbers and he dropped constantly while Kendrick takes his time.

    That's it really.

drake fanbase sucks too but at least you know they really f*** with his music, you have a lot of people pretending kendrick is the messiah or some bullshit and most of the time they dont even listen to the music that much, they pretend his s*** is the best off metacritic and pitchfork scores

You are making up an imaginary person. No one does this.

    better rapper
    doesn't hide
raps more than once every 5 years

you have to be genuinely re tarded to think "doesnt hide" and dropping infrequently are valid criticisms

They’re both 2 of the greatest to ever do it.

I prefer Drake because his music is more relatable. He has a song for pretty much any moment and any feeling. His relatability especially on his more personal introspective songs is what propelled him to where he is. I’d take his top 3 albums against Kendrick’s top 3 any day if I could only have one for the rest of my life.

Kendrick has also done a great job connecting with people (a requirement for any big, main stay artist) and he definitely raps about more political and socioeconomic things that Drake doesn’t (and couldn’t if he wanted to. He’d get crucified for it but beside the point).

Both a super versatile and skilled but they’re super different. I think many people gravitate towards drake just because he’s bigger and more pop but I think a large number of people (especially online) go to Kendrick because A) he’s the “underdog” to them in some sort of way because they feel counterculture and want to rail against the more mainstream/pop artist even though Kendrick is still mainstream and still makes popular music. B) They want to feel like they have “refined” tastes and that they’re fans of “real hip hop” because to them that’s a badge of honor and they care more about that then the music and C) they like to just hop on whatever is highly reviewed because again, makes them feel superior in their tastes. Drake fans often to the same but in reverse for sales/stats/records, etc.

To me, the biggest thing for Drake (which does play into the numbers game) is no one has done/can do what he has done in terms of his omnipresence and dominance over the last 10+ years. Music industry has changed so much that makes it easier than ever for anyone to have a platform and for artists to be huge one minute and a nobody the next and he’s withstood all of that and continues to be the biggest fish in the pond. No one can do what Drake can do and he’s proven that repeatedly.

Kendrick of course has also done big numbers, had hits, huge tours, won tons of awards, but most the pro-Kendrick/anti-drake crowd say it’s Kendrick’s lyricism and musical style/influences and subject matter that really set him apart. And while he is great at all those things and I think that’s why people love him and he’s become the behemoth he is today, if I’m being honest I do not think he is the undisputed best or the only one doing/able to do any of those things. There are more lyrical rappers, there are rappers who do better things musically, there are rappers who are all about black culture and socioeconomic issues, etc. Not at all trying to be inflammatory but to me The Roots/Black Thought/Questlove do everything Kendrick does and do it to the same level of quality.
