I feel like he had some connections to get sampled and signed at first, but he could potentially be close to The Weeknd level right now based on his music if he released that debut and kept making music

I think he'd be at least Frank level post Channel Orange if his album actually dropped and he continued making music. But you still didn't explain how that makes sense - if that leak was fabricated for him to capitalize off, why would he then go into hiding for years? People are speaking about him today but it should have been a lot more people if it really was a lie meant to get him publicity

I'm saying he could potentially be close to The Weeknd level if after the leak, he actually released a debut album and continued dropping music instead of going into hiding. The music is good enough, that project ranked high on publications' year end lists even though it was some unfinished demos. Would be a critical darling, more people would check him out and he'd probably be getting radio play, not just being talked about on blogs and forums

This why your theory don't make sense @thenanlei. He could have fabricated the leak and dropped an album when the story was still big instead of waiting so long. Most people barely know about him/lost interest so they won't care if he eventually resurfaces

Had he dropped the album straight away, most people would have called the leak a PR stunt (which it was). It was smart to wait.
