25 Xander Bogaerts begins our list at the bottom spot because he still has a slim chance of turning this around. He has not completely bottomed out of the league just yet. After posting a disappointing 4.6 WAR season for the Padres in 2023, the struggles continued the following year with more injuries and less production only posting a 2.0 WAR season. While these numbers don’t seem too alarming, they are because the Padres signed him to an 11 year 280 million dollar deal which they are only in the 3rd year of and he has become the most untradable player in baseball. His power continues to evaporate as he posted his lowest SLG% .381 since his 2014 season

24 Eloy Jimenez is another guy on this list that has shown production in recent seasons so there’s still time to turn it around but he is losing time. 2024 was another disappointing year for Jimenez posting a career low wRC+ of 78, career low SLG% .336, career lows across the board on most stats. Playing in only 98 games with 349 plate appearances he struck out 20.1% of the time. He looks for a new beginning this season with the Tampa Rays.

23 Christopher Morel had a full seasons worth of at bats and had very minimal production in those 611 plate appearances posting a -1.0 WAR between two teams in 2024. His batting was abysmal with a slash line of .196 / .288 / .346 and K% of 26.0, his defense was equally as bad as his defensive rating of -7.1 at 3B was the lowest among all qualifying fielders. He is still considered a young upside player but that may change with continued struggles at the plate

22 Triston McKenzie still has some potential to break out of this rough 2024 season but it was bad enough to make this list. He posted a 6.46 FIP which ranks as the 3rd highest among pitchers with at least 60 IP. Big problem for him was the walks where he led all pitchers with a BB/9 of 5.83, giving free bases to go along with an HR/9 2.26 (4th highest among pitchers) is what results in a terrible all around season for him. His 75.2 IP with a -1.0 WAR did not help Cleveland in anyway during their playoff run.

21 Enyel De Los Santos got a good amount of innings pitched during the 2024 season across 3 teams (64.0 IP) but during those innings he allowed an extremely high HR/9 percentage of 2.39 which was the 3rd highest among pitchers with at least 60 innings. His saving grace is his respectable K/9 percentage but that becomes null when you combine it with a 5.96 FIP which was the 5th highest in baseball.

20 Will Benson was an everyday outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds for 2024 and he struggled throughout the year posting a slash line of .187 / .274 /.376 in 388 plate appearances. To go along with a negative defensive rating of -5.9. His K% of 39.7 was the highest in the entire major leagues amongst hitters with at least 350 at bats. He is lost at the plate for the most part and plays below average defense at all 3 outfield positions.

19 Chris Devinksi was once a solid reliever for some Houston Astros playoff teams but a reliever’s production can go sour very quickly and has for him. Posting a -0.7 WAR in just 26.2 innings pitched, thanks in part to a league leading 7.33 FIP with a ridiculous HR/9 rate of 3.04 which was the second highest in all of baseball.

18 Grant McCray had minimal playing time for the 2024 season with only 130 plate appearances, with more at bats he may rise up the list in future years evidence by his league leading K% of 43.1 topping Benson’s mark for the season.

17 Austin Hedges has been an automatic out in this league for a very long time and the only reason he’s not higher on this list is because he admittedly does do one thing great and that’s his defense. The only reason him making any rosters is purely his defense because when he’s at the plate he is all time bad, this past season posting a slash line of .152 / .203 / .220 with a wRC+ of 20. His xwOBA of .166 is the lowest among all hitters with 140 at bats or more, he has an extremely high K% of 34.2. He is a free out every time he steps to the plate and has not improved at any point of his career.

16 Grant Anderson I honestly had no idea who Grant Anderson was before doing research on this but he had himself one terrible season. Pitching in 26.2 IP, he gave up a league high HR/9 of 3.71 to go along with a FIP of 7.59 with a 3rd highest HR/FB% of 29.7. The very little innings he did pitch, other teams did damage to him while he posted a -0.9 WAR in his limited pitching

15 Javier Baez is a mainstay player in these type of lists due to the expectations teams have of him while he usually underperforms while showing small glimpses of excellence throughout his career but 2024 was definitely not one of those glimpses. Baez signed a 6 year 140 million dollar contract in 2022 and has underperformed every season for the Tigers. Particularly popular for his ridiculous swing and misses where it looks like he’s just gonna swing regardless of where the pitch is, his K% consistently stays above 24.0, his -0.7 WAR in 289 plate appearances was enough damage done to the team who went on a historic run after he was shelved for the rest of the season due to injury. His 2024 slash line of .184 / .221 / .294 will need to improve for his high price tag of 24 million for the next 3 seasons

14 Ty Blach had a consistently bad season and we reward that here on this list. He pitched in 71.1 IP and posted a top 10 lowest K/9 of 4.54 showing he was not fooling any batters all season long while having an ERA of 6.94 which was the 2nd highest in the league.

13 Jordan Montgomery signed late in the offseason and ended up having such a bad season that his owner publicly regretted the signing before the season even ended. Pitching in 117 IP, he posted a career high FIP of 4.48 with a career worst BB/9 of 3.38. The dbacks did not count on him posting a -1.4 WAR season on his 25 million dollar price tag for the 2024 season

12 Jake Diekman was a mainstay in the New York Mets bullpen for some reason, he pitched in 43 games while posting a -0.8 WAR. His BB/9 rate of 6.75 and HR/FB% 29.2 was one of the worst combinations for a relief pitcher all season, meaning when he wasn’t walking every batter in sight, he was giving up the long ball evidence by his FIP of 6.14

11 Nick Nastrini is another name I had never heard of before doing research but he managed to post a league high BB/9 of 9.08 which is absurdly high if you think about the next closest guy being at 7.55. His FIP of 7.37 was also a league high amongst pitchers with at least 30 IP. A very low K/9 6.56 to go along with his -0.5 WAR resulted in a scary bad season with limited innings.

10 Bryan De La Cruz is another guy who had every day at bats for his team and did consistently bad throughout the whole season, sometimes looking like he didn’t want to be there. A horrible defensive rating of -13.2 to go along with his offensive rating -19.5 resulted in a -1.2 WAR season with 622 plate appearances which is the highest on this list. While he does show some signs of being a decent bat, he must improve on his slash line of .233 / .271 / .384 and lower his K% of 27.3.
9 Martin Maldonado I try to refrain from putting too many backup catchers on these lists because they are there for the sole purpose of giving the main catcher a breather and just providing solid defense. But Maldonado’s time in this league is coming to an end as his defensive aspect of his game diminishes, he continues to get worse on the offensive end as well. His wRC+ this season was a horrid 11 to go along with a K% of 34.7, he has reached automatic out status like Austin Hedges. His .119 / .174 / .230 slash line is not good enough for any major league team.

8 Noelvi Marte is fresh off an 80 game PED suspension that saw his once promising skills diminish to a lowly wRC+ of 46 in just 242 plate appearances. All his numbers across the board tanked while he slashed .210 / .248 / .301 providing nothing for the Reds with his -1.5 WAR. Next season may be a make or break year for his career as he will have a full offseason this time to get ready for the new season

7 Taijuan Walker somehow was allowed to pitch 83.2 IP this past season and his numbers continued to drop off from a once respectable career. He posted a 7.10 ERA to go along with a top 10 worst HR/9 of 2.58. His -1.1 WAR season did nothing for the Phillies who had championship aspirations

6 Roddery Muñoz is another Marlins tank player on this list, his -1.6 WAR helped the Marlins in their goal to lose as many games as possible. He posted a 7.27 FIP with a 4th highest HR/9 of 2.83 in his 82.2 IP. He struggled mightily every time he was out there not able to get many batters out while having a BB/9 of 4.57.
5 Bobby Miller was supposed to be a top pitching prospect for the Dodgers but he has not shown any ability of this hype. He pitched 56.0 IP this past season and would regularly get blown up every start evidence by his ERA of 8.52 and FIP of 6.97, he rarely ever got past the 5th inning only going past the 5th in 3 of his 13 starts. His HR/9 of 2.73 was high and so was his BB/9 of 4.82, he had the 5th highest HR/FB% at 27.4. His -0.9 WAR will most likely keep him out of the dodgers rotation for a long while.

4 Tim Anderson Like many of his fallen White Sox teammates, Anderson has not found success like he had in the past. In 241 plate appearances for the Marlins, he posted a -1.4 WAR season with a lowly slash line of .214 / .237 / .226 showing that he could not get anything going. His wRC+ of 27 was a career low and he also had the 6th lowest BB% with 2.9 walks per at bat while having an astronomically high 28.2 K%

3 Eddie Rosario Once a World Series hero, Rosario has gone down hill ever since. This past season having the 2nd worst season in all of baseball with a -2.0 WAR, he could not get anything going at the plate with a slash line of .175 / .215 / .316 in 319 plate appearances. Doing this while playing historically bad defense results in one of the worst seasons for an mlb player in 2024

2 Brandon Drury Drury put up a league worst WAR of -2.1 in 360 plate appearances he was only able to slash .169 / .242 /.228 and a wRC+ of 34. Much like Rosario, the all around bad play on offense and defense puts him at the near the top of this list. His suspect defense was always hidden behind some solid power numbers but this past season it has gone completely downhill for Drury.

1 Jose Abreu I will give some respect to Jose Abreu who was once an MVP caliber player in this league but he was on an all time worst pace before the Astros cut him before the all star break in 2024. Many reasons for it, including his wRC+ of 0….which means he was the equivalent to not existing at the plate for the Astros this past season. He had the 2nd lowest xwoBA in the league at .198. He didn’t do anything right when batting with a slash line of .124 / .167 / .195. There’s no telling if he will get another chance at the big leagues after putting up these numbers but I salute Abreu for being a great player in the past.
