It’s interesting wes has made just enough movies in this style

and this particular one looks just fine but not anything great enough

for THIS to be the one that the majority of people are like okay the style has worn off, it isn’t hitting the same, he needs to switch it up

His last two had those reactions too but this one seems pretty damn unanimous

It's not the visuals that are the problem but the heart and soul of his films have felt kinda barren for the last couple

True I looped them in together.

I think for most people, his visual style IS what indicates the lack of heart/soul/weight/emotional anchor. As soon as they saw what this one looks like, they probably knew okay this is going to be a distant, cold, arms length, dry comedic thing. I think the style is inseparable from that Wes stigma atm.

IMO his last ones have heart but they kinda have a layer of heart between Wes himself and the viewer, not with any of the actual characters lmfao, which sucks because that was part of his bread and butter. And as you say, the style doesn’t mean it can’t have heart, as evidenced by basically all of them (no matter how visually distinct they got) up until French dispatch

    This movie looks terrible

Still hasn't recaptured the magic of what made Darjeeling so special

yeah I never understood that take. I been a fan since Tenenbaums came out and never felt "distant, cold, arms length" until the last couple. his sense of humour maybe not alway for everyone but like if you didnt think Life Aquatic was funny back in the day I probably didnt want to hang out with you anyway.

I think s*** like The Lighthouse and Seventh Seal are funnier than most comedies anyway so im probably a bad judge.

Tim Chalamet, Jeffrey Wright, and Owen Wilson's cameo are worth it for French

Asteroid City is just crap. Shame cause Jason Schwartzmann is a comedic genius

the play thing was too meta for me and didn't really work imo

didn't know this was out until now might just wait for this one to hit streaming

  • Jun 3, 2025

A lot of people were checked out by trailer 1 and I thought it looked good so I was primed to like this, but I really liked it

There is an actual family story going on in the middle and actual dynamics. Its all conveyed in a very childlike dry way, but this being a straight story without any framing devices or meta contextual layers of storytelling, and just being a comedy first makes the Wes detachedness feel way more in service of the plot and not like an annoying Wes choice that I wish was dialled back

And Kate winslets daughter was insanely good and sold a lot of the plot. Shes like Florence Pugh 2

Basically a fun road trip father daughter reconciliation story

Also this adds Wes to the list of directors who have depicted the afterlife and so that makes it worth existing if nothing else imo! That is a super cool thing to see through his lens
