Honestly, Nevermind definitely did not gain him any goodwill. The project was dunked on crazy and performed poorly for drake album standards. It’s kinda turned into a cult classic now amongst some people on the internet, but overall most people still don’t rate it highly

Ehh I don’t think it slid at all. Billboard changed the way they counted streams toward sales, it was a tape full of demos or leaked songs, drake was never going to bundle his music for the sake of getting more sales and Kenny chesney beat him out because of that… that’s about the jist if it. I certainly would not say this was the beginning of the end.. especially with the way CLB performed a year and a half later after DLDT

yeah Honestly Nevermind is very divisive some people love it and it put a lot of people onto house and different EDM sounds but others are calling it weak im glad he made it though personal classic for me

yeah fair i mean what does a drake fall off even look like tbh. his next singles and album are still gonna do numbers that are the best in some people’s careers and tbh i don’t think he cares too much about numbers at this point considering he isn’t putting out deluxes or playing the sales games others do

i think it earned him goodwill for making a concerted effort to focus on a singular sound for an entire album instead of trying to appeal to every demographic and market at once like he usually does. even if it didn't resonate with everyone, it's still more respected than most of his post-IYRTITL output simply because it feels like a real passion project.

CLB and FATD were more commercially successful but they were also scrutinized much more and did more to hurt his reputation as an artist. the reaction to HNVM just reflects the nature of dropping an experimental album, some people are gonna like it and others are gonna hate it. you'd rather get that reaction than having people question if you even take your artistry seriously and if you're only dropping albums to pad your stats on the charts.

HNM definitely had a lot of hate but it did pretty well with the critics relative to his other releases this decade, it also has the most loyal cult following of any project he’s done this decade. Ultimately though it’s perceived as a novelty project and not really part of his main cannon and that’s why it didn’t gain him as much goodwill as his top tier projects.

Her Loss and FATD containing literally Zero EDM/House influence kind of underscores the novelty of HNM even more.

Her Loss definitely had him in people’s good graces too but it not being a solo effort made it a novelty project as well. People wanted to see him sustain that level of quality and execution on his own rap project.

I think you could make the argument that the announcement of FATD generated all time hype for a Drake album akin to Views, CLB, etc. This coincides with Drake’s last two projects really moving his momentum forward and then the “they say they miss the old Drake girl don’t tempt me” reference in the announcement like I think there’s a timeline where things really would’ve hit another gear. Unfortunately FATD not only was a misguided and bloated album, but the rollout was so exhausting and honestly just s*** it kind of is representative of the feedback it got. I wish he showed more of an effort to focus on the process like he used to from the announcement to the rollout to the execution. The fact that delayed the release 6 hours AFTER 12am says it all like bro wtf are you doing lol
