funny thing is the riff in the bridge goes way back to pre weezer days ill find the original demo
rivers is a mad man he always constantly revisiting stuff and reworking stuff
Oh f*** California snow mann
made a post breaking down the storytelling it’s a very sad song and amazingly written through pop beats

what’s your top then at top of your head
byzantine is so good, it’s the creativity i wanted more from, this bossanova mixed in with bunch of cute synth - where else could you get that from? who else be putting this out??
big fan of california snow tho, that’s how i envisioned black to be, it’s 100% modern yet it’s a super weezer song from a lyrical pov, the saddest of how the “woo’s” goes on the last verse are heartbreaking, love that contrast, he’s really singing thiis of the rockstar party lifestyle we al chase for yet leaves you more lonesome, the song of every rockstar that died lost in that...
what i love the most about california snow is how structure wise even tho the prod is ultra pop and rap it super progressive it reminds me of red for that: starts with those dope saturated synths and that baseline on the low with rivers going on into the first verse right away, setting the tone and image of the rockstar being the big s*** fooling you this song is just bragging ego trip
kick into the chorus where the drums drops and rivers uses california snow as the image for coke , the synth loops goes on and bass louder
then switch all that, chorus ends and the synth and bass gone, piano comes in and takes over it all and we get a new verse different from the opening lines, rivers goes on to set imagery which slowly leads from the bragging of the party lifestyle onto the lonesomeness outcome of it
the chorus comes back with huge bass but the synth isn’t here, the piano follows in and you didn’t even notice, amazing transition and prod - synth comes back on the second half often hook (cause im dooowwnn) but with a new element that is the lead guitar that comes in to add more texture to it all, again we keep progressing
then a break down, the first half of it - notice so far we havnt had a verse section that has repeated itself , super dramatic classic rivers buildup (panic attack stay the hell back it’s me and you against the world) with beautiful harmonies then second half of the break down which brings back the intro section verse of the song but not just repeating it, now the lyrics got dark since the story progressed, the theme is not egotrip anymore but the fall yet with the contrast of the “woo!” as if he still goes on to that lifestyle, the cry behind the shout (come on judas give me a kiss woo i can’t take no more of this...woo don’t nobody look at me.. woo just nail me up by the wrist) the woo sounds more and more sad, it’s like this echo of tht turmoil hell
then the chorus and it ends with a dope outro with the guitar that takes a nice spot
another example to me of the greatness of rivers subtle songwriting through the styles he ventures into, a chameleon through the sounds he loved bc just his passion of music yet he still gets better how to write songs and gets an expert at crafting it from structure wise musically but also lyrically and how to display that whilethe fans just shuts down to and asks for more rock basic musicabout longing girls..
it’s redondant they’re missing the point and that’s why i always stress how weezer is the most overlooked band ever and deserves so much more credit (im not saying this about you heyfella just in general consensus, just wanted to talk about this song and why it’s slept on imo)
to me this song is as much peak weezer as high as a kite, it just happens that high as a kite sounds more like traditional weezer

!https://youtu.be/Ed11uKCzfT8that dog. are an LA band from 92 and dropped their first album in 93, this was around weezer got signed and was working on the blue album - they were doing club shows and what not and opened for that dog, at that time rivers even wrote a song about them titled “punk rock girl” which he demoed, it was never heard of until now he coded his own website and sells his demos on his market
on that first album they dropped that dog had a video shot by spike jonze, it’s not a reach to assume that from this to the undone and buddy holly videos shot by spike jonze, there was prolly some link and spike heard of weezer through that dog or what not which led to that
what’s interesting about that dog is they are all females but one guy in the band and most of them are daughters of important ppl: the singer i believe is the daughter of a producer, but most importantly and what picks our interest here is rachel the bassist of the band is the daughter of charlie haden
may he rest in peace- for those unaware charlie was a longtime prolific jazz bassist that goes back to the 50s and a contributor to the free jazz and avant garde jazz scene with his work with ornette coleman, he is indeed the bassist on this iconic and very important album to jazz culture:
!https://youtu.be/YMasmoE-_vY(fun fact one of rachel sisters is now married to jack black! all of haden’s daughters do sing together too)
ofc as the blue album came out and took over the world like a hurricane, that dog were now the ones opening for weezer, rivers still had them in mind and was grateful - before the follow up to the blue album became the legendary pinkerton it was first a space rock opera fully fletched out with multiple characters of different genders that had each singers attributed to these roles with one of them being rachel haden as laurel, the project was titled songs from the black hole
but that’s it for that, if i get into that im gonna digress hardcore, the reason I bring this up and charlie haden’s legacy and own work is because rivers father himself was a great altho short lived jazz musician too
frank cuomo was a jazz drummer in the sixties to seventies, never went big but nether less found a spot on a 1970 wayne shorter album, a blue note record none the less! the most iconic jazz label, and boy did he killed that b****, here is a song where he snaps out and does a dope ass drum solo at 3 minutes mark:
!https://youtu.be/59xBsFHQtjkit seems to be the only notable recording we know of in which he is credited
this was recorded two months after rivers birth, he was the one who got rivers obsessed over soccer - he missed rivers birth to stay home and watch the 1970 world cup live on tv, in fact he named rivers after the three stars of the 1970 world cup: riva (italy), rivera (italy) and rivelino (brazil) - rivers was born with a leg shorter than the other, it didn’t stop him to play soccer and trying to go pro but either his shorter leg stopped him from entering that or he had an injury that stopped him I don’t recall, but this is actually what led him to become full time musician, if not for that weezer probably would’ve never happened?
after the blue albums success he went under surgery to correct his leg which got him in a hospital bed and walking around a cane, if you’re familiar you’ve already guessed that this sounds like the lyrics of the good life mf that’s because that what the songs about and when it was written, the xray photo of his broken bone was used as the back cover of the ep of the good life
frank disappeared from rivers and his brother’s life and moved to germany where he had another kid who himself went semi pro on soccer, it runs in the family
but they’ve since reconnected and made peace, some years ago in 2015 frank got on stage for the first time with rivers:

frank is the subject of some of the most crucial weezer song, such as say it ain’t so
