I haven’t listened to an album after Maladroit. That 8 year period is amazing. First 2 albums are in my top 100 and blue gets a full play out of me every other month; as well as the Pinkerton high school show.

In 2016 The Monkees made their big return with a first and original studio album in 20y!

going back to the old formula in the sixties of when other ppl wrote for them, who better to pen the lead comeback single other than the genuis of Rivers Cuomo?

produced by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne bassist backing vocals, also wrote a song for the album - passed away due to covid, rip) the song is a monkees traditional sounding blast song, yet behind it all its so easy to hear how much of a rivers cuomo written song it is, especially at the beautiful bridge which is totally weezerish

here’s a cool short video about the monkees talking about coming up with the album, at 1:49 you can catch them talking about rivers song:

original had some different lines here and there but micky dolenz find some of them a lil weird so readjusted some

the album also features a Harry Nilsson pinned song for the monkees they never did until now, songs by Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) Neil Diamond, the great Andy Partridge from XTC also has Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller teaming up to write a song together for it, @Elric you into monkees?

weezer had already recorded a cover of “i’m a believer” for the movie shrek 4 ( @Jerry_Seinfeld since you love covers!)

I’d heard that cover version before, but they do a great job of it. Never got into the Monkees but that was a pretty interesting read! Shame about the Fountains of Wayne guy passing away, I actually know some people who knew him personally. RIP.

Yeah Monkees are cool. I like how they got hired as a boy band that didn't know how to play any instruments, saw studio musicians composing their songs for them in the studio, felt shame, and then learned how to play their own music

That’s wild lol. Some of it works surprisingly very well. Wouldn’t mind seeing Kanye with some rock acts, hopefully he’s really working with Mars Volta like he alluded to

rivers has also referenced many times to kanye in interviews or twitter as influence on the recent albums and or wanting to work with him

bruh mars volta x ye would end the game wonder what he meant by that, like finish the album?? as in finish song we did together for my new album? or they are on multiple songs on it??? or he has a whole other album ready with them or for them (production wise)??? or are they on a collaboration album??? so many possibilities so little answers

I feel like there was a rumor he was executive producer for a rock album coming out, then he said that on twitter but idk if he was manic or being fr lol. I hope they work together, that would be some mind blowing stuff. In fact, it’s been far too long since I’ve listened to MV, will remedy that in a bit.
