I think there was a part in the interview where he said he tried that last attempt to be mainstream with The Black Album, but the funny thing is, if Weezer just did their own thing and not cared about becoming mainstream they would 100% grow overtime. Like Teal was just them having fun and Africa got huge. That's the keys to the kingdom.

When I say mainstream I refer to a modern household pop act. Weezer was a household act, however in modern times new audiences might not even know who Weezer is. I'm not referring mainstream as a particular sound or anything, just overall popular artists.
