I’m of two minds on this. On one hand I am a massive fan of The Weeknd. Been a fan since the mixtape days. On the other hand, The Idol was very bad.
I am glad to say I did like this film quite a bit. Now I don’t believe I would have if I wasn’t a fan of Abel, but luckily I am. Hurry Up Tomorrow is a very personal and introspective film. From the surface, it’s about an artist at a crossroads, one that takes him down a dark path. That is an interesting angle to take a film like this and I think visually it was conveyed very well. The direction, cinematography, and score were all great for the most part. I did appreciate hearing songs from the album throughout the film as well but again that’s just a fan thing.
One thing that I consistently was questioning during the film was the writing. It felt like it was being convoluted for the sake of being convoluted. It all adds up in the end but I was left scratching my head a couple of times. Another thing that hindered the film for me was the opening 20 minutes. It DRAGGED. Like a lot. Luckily it got to a good spot but I was worried we’d have another Idol on our hands (thank god that wasn’t the case).
I will say, Abel has improved quite a bit as an actor. Certainly an improvement over his Idol performance.
At the end of the day, I do truly like Hurry Up Tomorrow. I believe almost any fan of The Weeknd will like this film to some extent. On a critical note, I like the ideas Abel conveys and I would like to see what he can bring to something that is not centered on him.
3/5
It was enjoyable
That spinning camera s*** being spammed in the beginning was not it
Bias aside I think people will like this but some will not for sure but that’s a given of course.
I loved it tho lol I had a feeling I already wanna see it again. The performances were great and Trey did great job directing. I loved the long shots they took in sequences and visuals go crazy. Score/soundtrack was dope I was vibing out in the theater lol. I’d give it an 8/10 very enjoyable and an even better time if you are a Weeknd fan.

Yeah no you’re spot on some shots and silence I think lingered just a hair too long paired with some of the writing especially at one part had me like uhh sure 💀
Love your review very thought out, detailed and precise. I am glad this is lightyears better than The Idol lol
weird enough the movie this reminded me of the most was Smile 2
Now that you say that lol I mean not completely but I get where you’re coming from
was not expecting it to be that funny
him telling me Jenna to stfu and her roasting Dawn FMs sales lmao. Also definitely saw the ending come of her and Abel being the same person as soon as they said Persona was an influence. They even did the same face fading into another face thing at the end
S*** had me rolling
I know the clearly a sign of an unsure studio but it’s kinda unique aura when there’s 0 review embargo and people just go to see it and collectively discuss the film and form the consensus in real time, rather than a set of reviews and a RT number setting the tone before it opens. I like it a lot
This probably been said already but the fan event was Hurry Up Tomorrow the I would assume music video was played it was amazing

I’m not gonna hold you, I thought that was the beginning of the movie
I enjoyed it. But I’m a huge fan. I don’t think the movie will be for the people that don’t listen to his music tho
I’m not gonna hold you, I thought that was the beginning of the movie
My entire theater was like huh once it ended and the movie began lol
I’m not gonna hold you, I thought that was the beginning of the movie
Nah literally it had me for a second the way the camera was panning & the shots the tee’d up it felt like it was I can’t blame you lmaooo
Just got out of the theater.. I have a lot of thoughts but I will say as of right now that I did enjoy this movie.
If you’re a fan of Abel and his music, you will more than likely enjoy this.
If you don’t care much about him or his music, I am not sure if this will hit as hard for you.
Way better than The Idol thank god. Abel grew a LOT as an actor. The film drags at points but once it gets to the point it doesn’t waste much time. The writing and the directing could use some work.
is the wake me up scene good? that's honestly all i could care about
Yes
It was enjoyable
That spinning camera s*** being spammed in the beginning was not it
That’s like the least of my complaints lmao
Toned down compared to what he usually does tbh
