to be fair he wrote it as a white family and didnt make it a black film until he approached kelv harrison jr and asked him what role he wanted to play, the brother (tyler) or luke (lucas hedges) when kelv said he wanted to play tyler thats when he decided to make the cast black and kelv and SKB also helped to touch on parts of the script to make them more black per say

This movie f***ed me up, so good and true to the kind of grey area that is life.

Its use of music is something I've always wanted to see in film, this director really has not just taste but a sense of the art we grow up on.

When True Love Waits played that killed me with tears. Especially the part in the prison with the picture oh my god.

Good s***, won't watch again probably lol. Too heavy

This movie made me message my f***ing ex i havent spoken to in years lmfao

the use of Ghost! was unmatched

the song completely matches Tyler’s mindset, he is at this party full of people he considered friends but no one is excited he’s there, he starts to understand how much he’s pushed people away, he moves across the party silently like a “Ghost”

then when the tragedy happens we cut to a shot of Emily and at this point the second half of the song starts playing in which the lyrics say “i hope they understand that i really understand that they don’t understand” this basically sums up Emily and Tyler after the tragedy, she understands that people will not understand her brother and will always see him as a monster, it also explains why Tyler plead guilty cuz he sees himself as a monster too

the use of be above it, seigfried and true love waits are also incredible

There’s a masterpiece somewhere in this, unsure as to what to make of this right now. Still very enjoyable, lots to appreciate from its cinematography to its all around great cast

Might be bit overwhelmed since I felt a strong personal connection to the son but with the exception of some overbearing song choices and questionable direction, first half was absolute riveting with a fantastic Kelvin Harrison Jr who continues to flourish and make quite the name for himself in the industry. You can’t wish for a better start — in a just world Harrison would get an Academy Award nomination, hell even Taylor Russell who completely caught me by surprise in a much more subdued performance. And unlike lotta y’all itt, Shults seamslessly transitions to a second half that’s yes distinct in tone, flare but whilst simultaneously driving the overall themes of family, loss and love to much bigger and universal heights. All in all, while not being as flashy and demanding as its first hour it’s the calm and profound Taylor Russell lead half that impresses more from a writing standpoint

Shults must be lurking on KTT, cuz the soundtrack man
