You gon have to reference me cause i dont remember.
And I always assumed Jungle was just some area or town in toronto and thats who the girl was from, I aint know that was a set
Energy - Reps Up/G-Way reference (2015)
Know Yourself - Reps Up/G-Way reference (2015)
30 for 30 Freestyle - Response to his party getting shot up/Toronto street politics (2015)
just off the top of my head. Also literally half of IYRTITL, Views, and More Life, don't have time to go through all 3 albums and find examples, best example is probably "No Long Talk"
these are all pre-Scorpion

30 for 30 i do recall that. I stand corrected.
It’s still a jarring shift seeing what drake content has become tbh.
Fair point.
I’m not really upset at him for it or anything, tbh, I like that song, I just think it still hits a weird note.
It’s hard for me to understand why, but it just feels like a strange choice for Drake to rap about that on a record.
Maybe I’m still just caught up in his old school image or something, idk. But I think he just has a hard time conveying the energy I associate with street s***.
I also don’t have a problem with people rapping about fictional things; so long as they aren’t claiming real world gangs or something stupid like that; if you wanna rap about killing people, then I won’t try to stop you. The thing for me though, is that I feel like you have to sound like you believe it yourself for the song to work as well as possible. And idk, when Drake raps about guns or having people knocked off or something, I feel like he knows he’s just talking.
But yeah, I know I’ve been clowning Drake these past few weeks for the beef stuff, but I do genuinely enjoy and respect his music, so it’s not me trying to get at him or anything.
Sorry for the novel length response, lol.
Nah I totally get that, it’s not gonna resonate with everybody
I think when you get to a certain level of fame in rap, you have to lean into it to a degree
Honestly I love when Drake gets into the mob ties/underworld boss vibe lmao
It’s all acting no matter what artist does it and he gives the best performance
I think when you get to a certain level of fame in rap, you have to lean into it to a degree
Kendrick literally didnt.
Hov came INTO the game talking mad guntalk and streettalk and actually started pivoting away the more bigger he got.
Yea it’s crazy but I’ll say this again, the multi million dollar machine behind Drake shouldn’t be underestimated. Word going to take some clever PR and creative marketing but I can see Drake coming back perhaps even stronger than before give it some time
coming back is one thing but stronger than before nah dawg thats straight up delusional
Was it necessary?
No
But the issue is, I don’t think it’s a facade ducks
I think the clean cut image was way more of a facade than what he’s doing now. A lot of the street s*** been around him for over a decade. It’s just that once he got comfortable enough with his standing he kind of let the real drake come through
And I don’t think he’s for a second gangster, but I do think he’s affiliated and that has always been the case.
you are a white kendrick lamar stan 💀💀💀
sums it up tbh
I am a black woman dumbass.
he would be taylor swift level if he leaned into his whiteness instead of acting gangster for the hood

whats the initiation into OVO?
sexual abuse history?
We gonna pretend this s*** isn't ignorant?

that has to be, by far, the worst accent to ever exist
Drake always had street ties even when he really started around 2009. He just never leaned on it.
The rebrand when he grew out the beard and his win against Meek is what really pushed him to being gangster.
It’s not like he’s pretending to be king von. He’s talking like a dude who runs with killers which isn’t a facade
I just cant imagine him making NWTS records over and over from a subject matter/ thematic standpoint and staying on top the way he has
See and this is what separates good rappers from good writers.
Drake rapping about his inner conflicts coming from a mixed background in a non-Logic way would make for way more compelling content than these last few years of “these 21 y/o girls with bbl dont wuv me” and “SHOT HIM IN DAYLIGHT”
But that would have to involve masterful writing. And I think Drake is a GREAT rapper, will prolly go down as one of our best.
But great writer?
Let’s be real tho, would y’all even want to hear that type of music from him?
I’m not a Drake Stan but even if he did, niggas will dismiss it cuz he grew up famous & most black people don’t see being mixed as a struggle
Honestly I think he wouldn’t be as big as he is without it
He’s putting on a persona obviously but In the early 2010s he was seen as the corny singer-rapper until he linked with Future
He was still the biggest rapper out, and made better albums
Also his biggest album, Views, is not neccessarilly street at all. His biggest singles were the melodic ones
Wasn’t necessary but it undoubtedly helped his career
Some of his biggest records are “mob boss Drake” vibes lol
Internet full of s***. Numbers say they love that

We talking in hindsight but you can definitely make that compelling.
