Nicki is talented and has always been but acting like she didn't benefit from a lack of REAL competition on a commercial level is capping.

I remember the crazy 2014 Iggy Azalea had with scoring hits back to back to back. That had Nicki on edge and she started taking shots talking about how "these girls don't write their own raps" like she does. This was years before Cardi even came on the scene and she used the exact same narrative when Cardi's presence started being too massive. She went on several rants about Cardi not writing her s*** like anyone would care about any of that.

Personally, I think that's why she couldn't do anything to counter Cardi or slow down her rise. People were tired of only ONE female rapper being successful commercially and were hungry for a new voice, even if it was one who wasn't as good as Nicki. Iggy had her run but it barely lasted a year before people moved on. Cardi's run has lasted longer because she's smarter and has a better team around her.

Love Nicki but that's why Drake's run will always be greater than hers. Drake QUICKLY proved that he could be successful without being under the YM umbrella and broke out less than 3 years in. Drake has had to deal with competition since day 1. Countless rappers have come and gone during his time and he's remained the #1 guy through it all. Drake has also done his part to embrace younger cats coming up in the game and he's always done that. Nicki didn't. She just stayed s***ting on everyone else and saying she was better than all of them.

She was the best because she was the only one allowed to be lol. There are female rappers just as good. Maybe not with the same ability to craft hits or to have the same pop star image but they've always been there. People just didn't give them a chance to make it mainstream-wise.

I remember the BET Award for Best Female Rapper went to Nicki for 8 STRAIGHT YEARS (if I'm not mistaken). If Nicki always had someone like Cardi B or Megan Thee Stallion or Doja Cat to compete with her on a commercial level from like 2010, the narrative would be VERY different today.

Being more conscious used to mean better at rapping to me when I was like 12 but not anymore. Nicki’s presence alone washes a majority of rappers male or female. I think hip hop heads sometimes underestimate how important voice, delivery and personality are and overestimate lyrical ability. I’d rather hear Nicki say “I’m a star sherif badge” than whatever Rap’s new thesis is (minus the 9th wonder beat)

Rapsody is way better than Nicki. She also competes with more men than Nicki does. There is nothing in rap that Nicki does better than rapsody.

As stated multiple times in here, the men were her competition. She dropped her debut album the same week as MBDTF.

From 2010-2012. Drake, Wayne, Jay, Ye, Em were dominating the charts, while future, cole and Kendrick were really starting to blow up as well. These were the rappers she was competing against. And y’all thinking she couldn’t be able to go toe to toe with these female rappers that struggle to go top 40.
