Well DrJ559, I think the idea of “too much ai” is the wrong question to be asking. Mostly because at this stage in the ai race it’s going to be here and going to say. So I think the more important questions are “does it feel soulfull” ? Meaning does it provoke thought and intrigue the way anything else would? Does it make me feel anything?

So to get it out of the way,
Copyright law is incredibly outdated and not at all fitting for contemporary use of media. As of right now and for the foreseeable future copyright law is incredibly flimsy.

Ideally what needs to happen is for these artists is to have the rights over their personal AI’s so when other people use it they can be in control of who, how, and how much money they receive for it.

Now as far as its use in music it’s pretty much whatever. In the right hands i believe it can be interesting. I truly don’t care if anyone uses it. The real litmus test is how it’s used and who’s using it and the context it’s being used in. Brian Eno been using ai programs since the 70’s

Is Kanye using Ai vocals over a Cyhi ref lazy? Yes. Is it interesting? No. But even if he didn’t use it we’d still be saying it was lazy and uninteresting because ultimately that verse isn’t that good (to me I guess).

And let’s make this abundantly clear, pop music for the masses is already Ai without it actually being ai. It’s engineered by a large group of writers who are checking off boxes for words and phrases that are trendy. AR’s using test groups to decide what needs to be changed and what it needs to sound like to get maximum replay ability. At this point most of the music being made might as well be Ai.

The only metric I grade anything on is soul. Regardless of Ai or no Ai. I've listened to many Ai projects and find some of them to be incredibly compelling and soulfull. The others? Eh. Exactly how I feel about other non ai music.

John Cage made music that was chance controlled - chords - silence - notes - all determined by randomness. Seems like he would have loved Ai.

William S Burroughs taught David Bowie the cut up method. Leaving his lyrics up by chance and randomness.

Idk. Seems like the natural evolution of art creating. Just another tool.

Agree with all of that except that the Sky City verse isn't interesting. It's an old song that leaked that fans have been clamoring for because of the leak; rather than rework it, it just releases with an AI vocal that shows the seams. Is this what fans want? Is this the only way to get the "old Kanye" that so many critics crave?
