I feel like a healthy dose of reality and constructive criticism will do wonders in the fight for representation and equality people are trying to push. And yes, there's a very large portion of commentary over this show that is just those anti-sjw grifters b****ing about something to farm views that have no real convictions or care for the source material.

I love Scooby Doo. I watched it all the time.

Scooby Doo is a good show to pallet swap. The characters have not and never will be defined by their whiteness, their cultures shift from series to series. It's a great show to play with this trope as long as some constants stay the same:

    • Fred is the fearless leader and architect
    • Daphne is the friendly, bubbly glue and looks
    • Velma is the brainy, witty problem solver
    • Shaggy and Scooby are the heart and powerhouses

Since they're all so different and still friends, things get pretty funny. The comedy writes itself.

Well, for they start off f***ing up by making all the characters do a 180. The worst is Norville. Why even have this character who's supposed to be the Shaggy stand in... Who isn't even like shaggy? Are they supposed to become what they were later...? Do they not want us to connect it to the original. This show NEEDS a straight man. It should have been Fred.

If that's the case, just make new characters. This show needs a Norville. It just shouldn't be the Shaggy stand in. He has no connection to Shaggy, he doesn't like food, he doesn't have a dog, he's not always baked, he doesn't have his van, he doesn't do s*** but sniff Velma's farts and act like a simp.

Which, btw, exposes one of Mindy's (or the team of writers') s***ty world views. Of which she has many. That being a decent person means you should get used and abused by s***ty people and all you come across as is a try-harding simp.

Simping shouldn't always get you the girl, that could be a rare case of this trope played right as unsatisfying as it is narratively, pain can be a good writing tool. And it's at least realistic. But then if that's true, have the character get some kind of catharsis and find his self worth inwardly. Because guess what?

It's okay, he gets a girl later and I'm sure there will be drama. The trailer spoiled it. But since this character won't be an mc and instead an OC who won't last since this is Scooby Doo and revolves around the main cast, let's hope they don't make a habit out of inventing throwaway consolation characters to make up for problematic writing that can be solved by making characters actually likeable and not oblivious, abrasive twats.

Creating throwaway POC love interests for your POC simping MC isn't answering the character flaw. Just solving a problem you created.

Similarly, because none of the characters are anything close to their counterparts, it feels like performative diversity. Their cultural backgrounds were never based on whether they were white, or black, so go ahead and swap them. You don't need a reason to. However, when you specifically point out that Fred sucks because he's white yet no other character has any cultural significance... It's so obviously pointed. No one appreciates this.

This show is ass. By all accounts from any side of any cultural perspective you're trying to take up arms for, this show is ASS. It's pretty blatantly a self insert POV where the MC just relentlessly vomits her s***ty world view at the audience and since the character is supposed to be a genius, you're supposed to see that she's spitting hard facts that no one wants to accept. Except instead of making a new, Scooby Doo inspired gang, they just take the Scooby Doo IP and just pallet swap them. Completely, not just appearance wise.

The show sexualizes 15 year olds to an uncomfortable degree. I don't care that it's a cartoon. It's weird when anime does it, it's weird here. Just age them up ffs. They're in highschool. Just make them 18 or college aged idk. It'd also make more sense since, while all the characters act like petulant teens so 15 isn't crazy, they are bizarrely thinking like adults at times because idk... The show is written by f***ing 40 year olds. 40 year olds don't think like teens. It's jarring.

Quit doing that goofy ass Big Mouth (awful show) humor thing. 40 year olds pretending to be teens is always f***ing goofy.

What sucks worse is that instead of acknowledging that all these characters suck major ass, they try to hang a lampshade over the very obvious faults just to completely play that s*** straight like... Not even really trying just blatantly saying we know this sucks but we're gonna go ahead and do it anyway...?

It's more problematic that Mindy's view on things are so judgemental and binary. The show espouses how they seek to subvert stereotypes and be inclusive...

Yet the bulk of these first two episodes is spent on emasculating Fred because he's white and a man and therefore needs to be made fun of for it and definitely has a tiny ass d***. Hilarious, how's that body positivity going? Velma is the short, fat, subversive POC protagonist on a mission to hate every white male for having a small d***. Something he can't change lmao.

Remember when I say the show needs a straight man? It's not about sexual orientation. A straight man is the one who keeps all the shenanigans grounded. All these characters are abysmal, sans Norville who is a doormat cosplaying as Shaggy. If it was gonna be anyone, it should have been Fred. It's in line with his character. He could have still been privileged but played it straight. Instead he's this awful, self obsessed, inept, hateful depiction of the writers' view of white men.

The worst part? The irony will not be observed by Mindy Kaling or the writers. This is their world view, in their mind Velma spouting all this bullshit is like how nihilist neckbeards viewed Rick Sanchez spouting all his bullshit: they are right and you don't want to accept it, but it doesn't matter. Except like most people, they don't understand the concept behind Rick Sanchez she just saw a winning formula and tried to ape it.

You're not supposed to like Rick. He has issues. And his issues aren't cute and witty, they're destructive and as such nobody wants to be around him. Yet Velma has people f***ing pining over her- in real life NONE OF YOU WOULD EVER BE FRIENDS WITH THIS PERSON. Why does every modern show need to be Rick and Morty/Bojack Horseman? S***ty MC with unhealed trauma alienating themselves from those around them?

They try to touch on this with Velma's mom leaving them being a story or something...? But tbh, that just makes her mom an a******. It only reinforces what's wrong with the show. No one has any self awareness. What is this bizarre reality these writers live in?

How could this person ever become the witty problem solver? She isn't smart. She cheats off Norville and whiler her lack of social skills has been a trope in the past, she's not lacking social skills because she's a bookworm. She lacks them because she's an awful, s***ty person. Yet 2 of the main cast falls for her because...? Right because this is a Mindy Kaling self insert.

Right now this show is ass. If all the characters somehow do 180s, like Velma somehow talking way less and being a lot more empathetic and actually getting smart, or Norville getting baked and becoming a pothead and buys a dog, or Fred takes steroids grows to be 6'1 and has some balls, or Daphne just becomes a likeable popular girl and they stop objectifying her while hanging a lamp shade over it.

But as of right now, this show is booty cheeks. This show is ass-ASS. Rant over.

By all accounts, the show sounds like a Mindy Kaling self-insert with some of the most hateful rhetoric which has nothing to do with the show. How did y'all watch this and not die inside lmao.

People forget that Deadpool, for all its meta s***, was actually funny.

A few positives: The animation is solid and I love how vivid the show is, solid color palettes used throughout. And even though the whole simping for Velma thing from Norville/Shaggy is lame, I do like how they give him his own life and interests like snack reviews and photography. I would've preferred they leaned into that more instead making him obnoxiously anti-drugs and obsessed with Velma. Especially since Velma is extremely unlikeable in this show. I do also like how they did Fred and Daphne. They made Fred lame as hell but in a humorous way, he went from perfect golden boy who everybody loves to a flawed man-child constantly worried about his image. It's a funny and interesting take on him. And Daphne is probably the only character with an interesting backstory and motivation, showing she's more than just the red-haired popular pretty girl.

With that aside everything else is corny as hell, and the "wokeness" and "gay agenda" weirdos are complaining about isn't even the issue necessarily. The issue is that it's so basic to understand and they don't really even do all that much with it. So they change the race of Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy, not a problem. Does any of that have any bearing on their upbringing, interests, or views...not really. It's like you can tell they only made these changes with the sole intention of making people mad, and to me, that's wack. You setting these characters up for failure as a cheap middle finger to closeted or open racists and homophobes, when in reality it's a middle finger to fans of the show and characters who likely wouldn't mind the changes and even liked them if there was any actual depth to the characters that justified the changes.

Velma is a horrible person and I find myself not willing to root for her. She's unlikeable. She's like Daria in her attempts to be cold, judgmental, and sarcastic but she's even less likeable than Daria. Daria is already wack as f*** as is and her character type gets old REAL quick, but at least she had traits that made her relatable along with other characters to play off of that made her overt judgmental and sarcasm less eye-roll inducing. Velma has none of that. Also the show is gonna age like dog s*** rapidly due to the already dated pop culture jokes/references they make nonstop. They were better off making the whole season available upon release. Not many people are gonna keep checking back every week for a new episode if it is gonna continue to be this bad.

Rant over.
