lmfao
That's just how it be. That's the PC gaming life. Buy a console every 5-8 years and call it a day. It's the best option for the masses.
I have both so I'm straight either way. I just think the money sink to even get into it rn is absurd and you're looking at $1k minimum for a brand new half decent build that'll last a few years before upgrades and matches console standards. and then atleast another $500 for monitor, keyboard etc if you want a decent not cheap as hell experience. and my friends that main pc deal with problems with it all the time, there's alot of minutiae and troubleshooting that goes into it that nobody on a console ever has to experience, which is backwards when you're paying 3-4x the price of a console that guarantees a great experience all the time. and we're getting to a point the difference between greatest console performance and high end pc performance is getting more marginal by the year, so what truly makes it worth it?
not even close to a scam, wtf are you talking about with this dumbass reactionary post lmfao
it's a scam because individual part prices like gpu can fluctuate extremely and screw you if you want to keep up, and half the AAA experiences arent optimized correctly for pc to begin with. so unless you want to spend all your time staying informed on all your parts and troubleshooting constantly it's not worth it over a console 9/10 times. i stand on that
and it's funny you're s***ting on me for this because my base ps5 gets marathon locked 60 without a single drop and my brothers $3k pc has framedropping constantly on cryo/outpost, how do you explain that s***

This is what I mean though. You're a console gamer who's expecting a console experience on PC.
I can play a fully modded playthrough of Skyrim on PC. I have an infinite amount of titles I can always pull up and play from decades past easily. There's so many independent games that would never be on console because 1.) controller accessibility or 2.) they're truly independent and can't afford to port it over. My native resolution is higher on PC than a console. I have a bajillion retailers I can pick and choose from to get discounted games from, or DRM-free options from places like GOG so that I'll never have to worry about what I paid for being pulled from me. Et cetera, infinite laundry list.
On top of all of that, you can browse the web, be productive (code, model, draw, animate, simulate, etc.), and so much more. You can be as private as you want, or as public as you want, because it's your choice.
Yeah it could cost 2k. Could also cost like $500. You could troubleshoot chronically with hardware/software incompatibilities, you might troubleshoot for like an hour every year, if even. You deal with it because you want the PC experience, which hinges on customization and having the most amount of options. From each end of software to hardware.
If you want to sit down and play a video game, that's why consoles exist. I've been on PC my entire life, never once thought it was a "scam".

honestly troubleshooting hardware/software issues is one of the most fun parts of pc for me lol. maybe because i've always been around computers and love to tinker and push their limits. the satisfaction of getting everything right is one of the best feelings
it's a scam because everything has gotten exponentially expensive and no matter how much you spend many times games aren't optimized correctly for your exact setup and you have to keep upgrading year after year to keep up. my brother is a huge pc gamer type and built me one himself, i know how scammy this s*** is. locked down hardware guarantees a certain experience at a much lower cost
you're either trolling or you are really f***ing dumb, and so is your brother. you do not have to upgrade year after year, that's literally not how any of this works. not to mention performance on consoles is inferior in pretty much every metric even to a mid to low tier x86 pc, which these new consoles literally just are except locked down, and you end up paying more in a subscription to just access the f***ing internet and for games, which pc game sales are still unbeaten and if even that's too expensive for you, getting games free is trivial. you're talking s*** about something you don't even understand on any level
as bad of a deal as the SM is right now, it's still better than any proprietary console. and i own a (jailbroken) ps5 that i dual boot arch linux on.

why be a d*** about this? this is the experience of any pc gaming friend i've had to a varying degree. it's my opinion, relax lol

good post except for the fact that you can absolutely get a console experience on PC. that's literally how i have it set up underneath my TV right now. when i login it boots right up to steam gamescope (big picture) and everything just works. a lot of this has to do with the fact that i'm all linux so if you're on windows, yeah you can't really get that console experience there atm bc windows sucks.

im chillin, you just need to know how dumb what you're saying is. like it's not that serious, but don't say s*** like that if you don't want a response like that
like you're just genuinely clueless about everything you're talking about and you're not humble enough to admit that, so you're getting the response you're getting. you literally called it a scam, im not sure why you're confused about the smoke
i can appreciate the fact that you're trying to deescalate though, so i'll chill on that as long as you chill on calling my whole gaming setup a "scam"

We're also weirdos tho. A lot of people get easily frustrated when they face any obstacle. Convenience is king across the board right now in media, and instant gratification is a big symptom.
Part of the PC experience is tinkering. Being nerdy and passionate about tech is why PC gaming will always have a core base.

what's there to troubleshoot ? on linux im not troubleshooting anything on standard distros like cachyos. it's pretty much plug and play these days. windows on the other hand… the operating system that's supposed to be plug and play but isn't

im saying though what are y'all troubleshooting? only time im troubleshooting anything is when im adding something new, and a lot of the time that s*** just works. i got my girl a steam deck years ago and she uses it as a console and she hasn't troubleshooted a damn thing ever. only thing i set up on there was emudeck and some roms and that was headache free too. im just curious what y'all are talking about, because this idea that PC is synonymous with always needing to troubleshoot isn't accurate to me either.
i for one do weird stuff on my system which may or may not need troubleshooting, but when it comes to just wanting to play games it's way more convenient than even console these days or at least meeting that level. steam is partially responsible for that. if you're on linux especially you don't even need to seek out driver installers or s*** like that, that's included when you update the system. you really do just open steam, plug in any controller with SDL or xinput or dinput which is 99% of them or m&k and you're good
well maybe frame review units are out linus got that vr face reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/s/epO80AJ98H
pc gaming is such a scam and this is really the result of it
this is more of an AI problem than it is PC gaming lol
i built a pretty good system top of last year right before the tariff and the ram shortage s*** happened for a little over 1k and i can play pretty much any triple A game that came out last year and any that comes out this year.
sidenote though i play on 1080p cos 4k60 is honestly pretty overrated all things considered

my point is it's scammy for a regular person that wants a high end gaming experience because of price fluctuations and hikes with the added money/time/maintenance cost to keep it operating at a high level when a console needs none of that, and you only really find this out after you have a pc for a minute. there is a continued cost that a console doesn't have. if you disagree that's cool, but i know what im talking about and steam machines being $1050 before controller for a base experience cosigns exactly what im saying. all due respect bro you're a linux user so you really don't even know what the windows pc gaming experience is really like now which is what most people experience
good post except for the fact that you can absolutely get a console experience on PC. that's literally how i have it set up underneath my TV right now. when i login it boots right up to steam gamescope (big picture) and everything just works. a lot of this has to do with the fact that i'm all linux so if you're on windows, yeah you can't really get that console experience there atm bc windows sucks.
Yeah, but you still gotta set it up. Think about the lowest common denominator gamer. They buy a PS5 Pro from the store, they hook it up, they set up a username and password and put in their lil PS Plus code for internet or w/e it's called now, install Fortnite, and they're in. That's the real console experience.
Now imagine you get a PC. You gotta pick and choose a prebuilt or build one yourself, making sure you won't face compatibility issues with Linux (less of a problem now but can still happen). Now you gotta go through the installation of Linux (most PC gamers won't do this, let alone console gamers). All to find out that you can't run Fortnite anyway because of its anti-cheat, a problem u'll never find on console.
The console experience will always be easier and plug-'n'-play. Doesn't mean it's always better, it's just better for some and I'd honestly say most people.

Not always but I posted about my last troubleshooting prob a few pages ago in the PC gaming thread. Had to go through multiple driver wipes/reinstalls, scrolling through device manager, running through crash/BSOD logs, and eventually figured out it was a BIOS update that solved everything.
That's the type of s***, though it's not an everyday thing, can make ppl frustrated.
Anyway getting on-topic with the actual Steam hardware topic:
Valve finally released the SteamOS image here
help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-4227
So if you've got a laptop or PC you're not using, you can rig it to basically be a Steam Machine anyway. It just won't have the form factor. As long as it has AMD architecture.
If anything, SteamOS being out in the public is the big win out of this whole thing.

Does SteamOS need AMD architecture to run?

this + your other post is essentially what i'm saying, and honestly I probably shouldn't have used the word "scam" to begin with cus it clearly has a different meaning to people than what I used it for lol so I'll own that, that's my bad

Per documentation, the current beta only supports AMD-powered handhelds and systems with AMD discrete GPU's. You can try outside of their compatible devices but it's probably not going to be pretty. You can work around it with Bazzite probably.
My assumption is because Linux in general plays much better with AMD architecture/drivers than Nvidia. It's not a Steam thing, it's a Nvidia thing.

most of the time its older games and software. majority of the time they won't work properly without proper workarounds and sometimes not at all. on rare occasion this could happen any newer programs but those aren't really much of a big deal. pretty much what i mean by "troubleshooting" if you want to call it that. haven't had hardware issues on my newer pc besides mobo/bios flashing one time due to instabilities but i f*** with windows alottt so most of it is my fault lol
eventually you'll have to
and it'll be thousands with how much prices have hiked. you got lucky buying everything when you did before the shortages, anyone getting into pc gaming now is f***ed
Man you’re thinking about it too much. I have a 2080 super, 64gb ram, and a 5950x. Have had zero issue and only want to upgrade my gpu out of indulgence.
unboxing experience looks so nice
