what a s*** list
R Kelly objectively clears everyone on that list
MJ should also be in the top 5
Also George Michael and TheWeeknd deserve a spot in the top 15
4 octave range vs 2
You might like how Elvis sounds but factually Jackson had the better, more expansive voice.
They gave their criteria at the start of the list and it doesn’t include vocal range
Well, if you’re discussing the best singers, it plays a part. Best to how some clown RS writer thinks or actually on a technical level?
MJ is an elite rated vocalist, on all metrics. Range, ability, all of it. Is this a list on how they sound or the factual technical ability list?
The same can’t be said for the majority of those higher, especially the white rockstars whose music we really “can’t enjoy knowing what we know”.
It’s not even worth debating because RS is full of s*** and heaven forbid Jackson actually gets any praise for his easily demonstrable abilities. I don’t think he should be #1, but the position is a joke and anyone who doesn’t have their head up their ass would know it.
It's a rock and roll magazine so if you understand that genre you know expecting them to go off a strictly technical, octave-based rating makes no sense. Rock and roll is supposed to be something anybody can do and even the s***tiest singer can come up with a masterpiece because it's more of about capturing a certain energy and being creative then showing off your technical ability. That's why Dylan ended rankings so high.
I already posted my top 10 singers in two separate lists cause I find an impossible to rank rock and roll with r&b singers because they come from totally different schools of thought and any list like this is going to look ridiculous.
Having said that I think Prince and Elvis are two of the only singers who could be considered legends in both lanes.
@KingOfPop is known for going hard as hell for his idol yes, but you’re not about to gaslight him on this
Michael was doing things at 12 that Elvis couldn’t have done on his best day
I don't think you've spent enough time with Elvis' discography

top 5 personal vocalists ever
liam gallagher
morrissey
paul westerberg
hamilton leithauser
jack white/prince (tied)
I love Abel’s music too, but he’s not a top 15 singer in music history
Is this list based off actual singing capabilities or their body of work?

" keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List. Talent is impressive; genius is transcendent. Sure, many of the people here were born with massive pipes, perfect pitch, and boundless range. Others have rougher, stranger, or more delicate instruments"
