I was so happy we were getting a original black led and directed fantasy movie

But of course we just have to center it around race, is that the only way black creatives can get funding or something?

Why don’t we think this is what Ryan himself wanted to create?

Y’all gotta realize one of the number one rules of writing is “write what you know”. Racism has been carved into our DNA our whole lifetime. When you see s*** happening on the news, or are having s*** happen to you personally, sometimes it’s harder to not let it affect your work.

Ryan was allowed to take a white franchise “Rocky”, and make it majority black. I just don’t think producers would tell him “hey you need to change your idea and base it around racism or else”….Ryan just doesn’t give me that type of vibe. Similar to Boots Riley, I feel like he centered “Sorry to bother you” around race because that’s the story he wanted to tell in his own unique way.

Getting more opportunities for black filmmakers to emerge so we have more variety is the real issue, not producers forcing Ryan to do a film centered around race. Ryan was just locked in the Marvel system for almost 10 years, he’s finally free, that man’s making what he wants to make now.

It legit just sounds like he came up with a pitch for Blade and decided he didn't need Marvel to make it. Dev Patel said the same thing about Monkey Man. He didn't need to be James Bond.

I agree 100%. Way too coincidental. And let’s be real, is marvel really gonna make a Blade movie centered around the KKK? I doubt it. So you’re right. That’s why I don’t see it being “hey Ryan, add some racism or we won’t make your film”

I’m not a comic head but isn’t that true to the comics for Captain America? Has the KKK been apart of a big storyline for Blade?

You said you believe Ryan pitched them this idea, if so, obviously there was some creative disagreement to prompt Ryan to do his own thing.

This has nothing to do with Ryan..but no one actually thinks corporate executives straight up say "add racism, oppression, a woman, talking animal sidekicks, etc. in a movie or else." Filmmakers are very aware of the film industry and what is more likely to get green lit. To say some don't cater to the film industry or climate at the time..or it having an influence on their ideas..or them compromising in order to get their projects off the ground would be completely naive.

Idk what coogler thinking but I’m sure the movie will be fine. Hopefully it’s actually really fire but WF made me question coogler a bit. The concept just sounds tired asf
