The amount of people truly hating this movie isn’t some large number worth investing energy into. The movie is nominated for best picture and got good reviews . You are in here calling it underrated like be for real . We can’t control everyone’s opinions if someone hates something you love you have different taste . I think the movie is solid . I just don’t like how talking about art has gotten like this

I alluded to this a bit in my previous post about this film, but there are Black people (on this forum along with Twitter, etc.) who consider themselves film experts who have only been taught that only films by white or Japanese directors are to be artistically celebrated and put on a pedestal. These are Black people who can tell you every European director or movement in the history of film but don’t know the contributions Black directors like Oscar Micheaux, Ousmane Sembène, Djibril Diop Mambéty, Julie Dash, Haile Gerima etc. have made. Most of their images of Black directors and Black films in general start with Spike Lee (good) and end with Tyler Perry (bad). There is no room for nuance in the role Black directors have played in the history of film, which has been very significant for many reasons.

Really liked it when I saw it in theaters but I recently streamed it and wow what a great movie!

I mean this a worthwhile point but on a forum especially ktt sometimes too much time is spent on arguments with a people not present . Its possible that many are casual viewers they only know so many black directors or they at time downplay the work of others while worshipping or cherishing white directors . Without seeing the long term perils of us not telling our own stories .

That can all be true while criticizing a black made movie not out of hate but just not clicking with them . S*** I want even more black directors to boom in mainstream . I do think they are often judged harder or come on to the scene with success like coogler or peele then every movie someone wants that same exact feeling .

I appreciate that they challenge audiences. A alternate history à la Tarantino a fun film to go to not based on a true story but you see the truth to it and the allegorical monsters are a relatable horror .

I just don’t like forum discussions being “ f*** this hater “ rather than discussing the actual elements of the movie . As well as caring so much about awards . I want Ryan and the crew to win for their own success as I did no other choice but at the end of the day the awards are popularity , campaigning and fanbases . Any time something is nominated people will say it’s overrated and hate every single year .

I wish there was a big push for 70mm iMax . They are making new ones for Odyessy luckily one by me . I like that coogler broke down the benefits and seeing sinners was an event . I just think too much discussion gets bogged down with “ greatest ever “ or “ trash mid overrated” . rather than what emotionally moved you about movie or stuck with you

I'm not talking about the quality of the film; that is one thing. I'm talking about people's emotional reaction to the success of it and a***yzing the root of their contempt for that success. That is the big issue in all of this. There is too much proof that certain people's disapproval of the films' success goes far beyond the quality of the film. We are way past that.
