Felt like a Tarantino/Robrigaz kinda movie.

Kinda fun, not movie of the year

probably the biggest rated R original movie for sure. but in a year of F4, Superman. AND Avatar...

Only Avatar is guaranteed to be a smash here

elaborate on technically? I see below you're only basing it on one actor's performance, that shouldn't make it a better film...

it's a rare and fascinating performance that you just don't see often. an experience to watch in itself. don't know if you've seen the film, but he's absolutely crazy in it. you don't see that often.

sinners is a good movie. and that's kind of it.

A preferred the movie “The Surfer” and a movie from Denmark called “Sauna”.

    I also liked “Mountainhead” more.

To be fair, it was shot and shown at Sundance 2023 BEFORE everything happened (not saying that it excuses what he did, but it wasn't made after everything came out)

timing of release and marketing inform art just as much as its production. albeit reductive, i'm still being quite "fair" about the reality of what this movie REPRESENTS

It was initially screened January 2023 (when I watched it)

The marketing of the film and subsequent release do play a role.

I guess my outlook on the film is a little different because I watched it before everything came out.

Was going to watch the Surfer but it left my cinema pretty fast. The reviews on google and imdb are horrible though.

Haven't heard of the other 2, what are they about?

He’s in every scene… so the movie is his and depends entirely on his performance. Outside of that, it was a well shot, decently well structured, well written and had a gripping story. Well directed by Bynum, who could be an up and coming great in terms of newish directors.

Did you see it? Can you judge it for yourself?

There weren’t any necessarily standout performances. Lindo was the best but that was his usual work.

And he shares the scenes with other actors/actresses? Ignoring the supporting cast is strange in any movie even in one where the MC gets more focus.

Yes I did but I'm asking you to understand your technical measures since you said it's better "technically" you've focused on his acting when there are other actors. And only now offer up vague points ("well") about it's writing, structure, directing etc and in contrast Sinners was just "good" with no standout performances, no mention about the story, directing, setting or cast of characters.

Having these opinions are fine, I was just expecting more detail and an elaborate breakdown when you start talking about "technically". Unless by technically you just meant that it was an old film that was shown this year?

“Sauna” is about a gay man who works at a sauna in Copenhagen where gay men come to f***, he don’t really have close friends and his only relationships are one night stands.
He has a one night stand with a trans man how is transitioning and they try to start a relationship.
But the gay community is not open towards the transman, and the gay guy can’t fit into the trans community.
It’s really about having a community vs not having one.
Coming from money vs coming from no money.
Coming from the city vs coming from a small town.
    It is a great watch

“Mountainhead” is on MAX and it’s about 4 tech millionaires having yearly vacationing together. 1 of them releases a new AI tool that makes the world break into war, and the tech guys start planning how they can takeover the world, because they feel they are the most fit for the job.
It’s a great personality study and it really shows the horror of the man child

Oooh I see. I meant "technically" because it just came out this year, even though it should have been out ages ago. I understand how that could have been misconstrued.
