we 9 pages in give it up bro
Even if the story is told mostly through cutscenes and other moments where the player is not in control the story is still 100% a part of the game's design. The player is fine with taking a more slow and stealthy approach to an encounter in Metal Gear solid, because the stakes of your mission are presented in such a captivating way.
Metal Gear solid is another exception to the rule. Of the examples i've listed, can you tell me if the cutscenes impact the gameplay or viceversa if the gameplay impacts the cutscenes?

I haven't played those games but they probably do lmao. And if they don't that just means the narratives are poorly designed. From what I've heard from those games tho I would assume the stories have some merit. Like if something emotionally affecting happens in a cutscene those emotions are carried onto the next gameplay section and so on.

Also seems like you think metal gear is an "exception to the rule" just because you like those games lol. That series is like the best example of like "movie games" that have super long cutscenes in between gameplay where the player has no control.
Madden is not a bad video game and only gets the hate it does because
A) People hate EA
B) the game isn’t deep so gameplay is expected to be flawless
It is the best game game play wise of the big 4 sports games

I think they dont at all. In tomb raider you're supposed to be a "weak" woman who throughout the story learns how to survive in a hostile enviroment, but in the gameplay you can kill other people, climb cliffs and hunt like a professional from the beginning. In red dead 2, the main gameplay aspect of the game is the open world but in missions you're not able to approach them however you want whenever you want. They're not necessarily bad games, far from it, but the issue remains

Wym, mgs has cinematics but the way you tackle missions impacts how the story goes, even if its just a little. The sorrow boss in mgs 3 is a prime example. You have choice in how you wanna execute a mission because the level design gives you freedom. It still has cinematics but at least what you do in gameplay affects the story one or way or another
GTA V is Rockstar’s absolute worst game to date.
It low key is the worst GTA title

But aren't you just proving my point with this. Your issues with these games is that the narrative design doesn't support the game design, and my point was that story or gameplay isn't more important than the other, but in a good game they should support each other. Not all games can achieve this tho. Your Red Dead 2 point is also more about just game design in general and not that much about narrative. (I've also seen those NakeyJakey videos too lmao)

But your point was that the dispute between cutscenes and gameplay is stupid because narrative design and game design are connected, i showed you that there are many cases where it doesnt, so the dispute isnt stupid. And these are not bad games but very acclaimes games

My point was that it's stupid that people consider story and gameplay as separate entities, when they should be thought about as just aspects of the design (much as visuals and sound). For example ign reviews (at least in the past I don't know if they still do this) give a separate score to story and gameplay. This is fueling a way of thinking where people argue over if story is more important than gameplay, which in my opinion is pointless

Lowkey tho I think I agree with your way of thinking in many ways we're just both talking about slightly different things

Ign are absolutely trash game reviewers and that method of reviewing is bad, so i agree with you on that part 100%. But when the games themselves are separating gameplay from story its kinda difficult to not consider them as separate entities. Many developers write the story first and then focus on gameplay, and what ends up happening is that the gameplay either ends up being shallow because it was an afterthought, or too detached from the main narrative
Also, the way we engage with these two aspects is very different. Story progresses through cutscenes where we only have to watch, while gameplay needs us to interact with the game to progress
Idk if you ever read Blood, Sweat and Pixels but check it out if you haven't. The development of movies and music do not encounter those issues, which is what I was getting at. This is in addition to the technological, budgetary and time constraints already pointed out to you.
You're saying there's no masterpiece YET, I can guarantee you the masterpiece you're waiting for will never arrive. We have to weigh up the mistakes in a video game and decide whether we're willing to overlook them in the grand scheme of things, whether the experience overall is still a masterpiece even with those flaws. There will always be a lack of memorable moments or disappointing ending equivalent in every single game you play, that's just how it is
I’ll put it this way: 2001, A Space Odyssey has mistakes, but I would still call it a masterpiece because I am able to overlook them in the gram scheme of things as you said. It’s still a 10/10, those mistakes don’t cost the movie any points. I just simply haven’t played a video game I can consider a 10/10... there’s always something that makes them 9/10 at most.
